Republicans became the first anti-federalist; they favored the retaining of the Articles of Confederation. As for the Federalists, they were in favor of the Constitution. The Federalists believed in a strong central government, as well as the Republicans. The Republicans wanted a strong central government with the Articles of Confederation being protected. Eventually, Republicans split because there were many arguments and flaws in the Republican party at the time. Which caused Jefferson to incorporate some Federalist ideas during his presidency. Which then caused the former Republican party name to be known as the Democrats.
