Benefits of Physical Exercise: 500-Words Essay
Shape.com tells the story of Jen Embry, a woman diagnosed with stage IA breast cancer. Test results were initially positive, but these positive results did not last. She began the Gerson therapy, which involved a vegan diet and a focus on fitness. Though her chance of survival was initially slim, she was eventually able to recover and subsequently run a half-marathon. Exercise helped her physically and psychologically, as yoga assisted her in battling anxiety and depression. Not every story is like this, however, as USA Today reports, only 23 percent of Americans are meeting the federal standards set in 2008 for time spent exercising. Exercise is of the utmost importance, but has been regularly ignored by Americans for the sake of careers and other outside responsibilities. Regular physical activity should be a priority due to the physical and psychological benefits, as well as the consequences of failing to do so.
Engaging in regular exercise has many positive effects, including the ability to control your weight, boost energy, get better sleep, and regulate your blood sugar. Frankly, there are numerous benefits to a regular exercise schedule, and these only list a few. Exercising makes one physically healthy, allowing them to avoid major health problems later in life. However, failing to exercise has a plethora of negative effects, including a higher susceptibility to strokes, high blood pressure, type two diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, as the Mayo Clinic reports. Do you want any of these side effects to happen to you? These types of consequences are not worth the risk; it is much more beneficial and less risky to make a regular habit of exercise.
A common misconception is that exercise only yields positive physical effects, and people tend to ignore the numerous psychological effects of doing so. Exercising boosts morale; it can also be a social event that allows for time with friends and family. As a result, it allows someone to battle anxiety and depression in an incredibly healthy way. This allows someone to feel more ready for work the next day, and for any other difficult tasks that may occur, as they have already prepared themselves physically and mentally through exercising. Not exercising raises the risk of depression and anxiety, while also worsening ones mood and readiness for the day. As such, the evidence shows that exercising is beneficial to ones mental wellness. It would not be prudent to ignore such an important need, one that helps someone psychologically as well as physically.
Around the globe, exercise has been on the back burner of peoples minds. Everyone has to prepare for work the next day, potentially unaware of the major health risks that they are taking by not engaging in regular exercise. Many eat very unhealthy foods, not realizing the potential consequences of doing so. In the sense of physical and psychological well-being, exercise is key. Without physical exercise, one is not only susceptible to obesity, high blood sugar, etc. but they are also prone to anxiety, depression, and other highly damaging mental side effects. In all respects, exercise is a necessary step to better ones life. Exercise is not simply about becoming physically strong, but about becoming mentally fortified, resulting in a much more excellent life.
