Depression Limits Young People’s Abilities to Reach Their Goals

Everyone wishes to be somewhere. We all want to succeed in life and live the future we dream of. And for us to achieve that setting goals is one factor which have to be done first before you can proceed which is not always easy as we have to strive hard to get there. This is because challenges will always be in the way. Some try hard to get to that road, some give up on the way while others do not try at all. A goal is a plan that one wants to follow in order to achieve what he or she wanted at the end. Because we are living in a new world of evolving technology almost everything seems to change. Lifestyle, fashion and education takes people by surprise. People just do not want to be left behind; they go with the flow. Some come to a point where if they do not meet their wants gets so emotional and get affected so much. Because of this they end up behaving in a different way. According to Durbin E.C. (2013), young people are the ones that are affected the most.

When their planned ideas do not go according to their wishes, they may end up being sick, aggressive, being anxious and some become depressed which is a serious problem. Depression is a very serious mental illness that causes deeper sadness leading to one losing hope in existing in life. Depression affects everyone but mostly common in young people. An individual who suffers depression may not accomplish what he or she has set to achieve. According to Katon W., Ludman E., Simon G. (2008) depression is a condition in which one loses focus to the things he or she is supposed to do and would feel lonely because of having that difficulty in socializing with people. Young people who suffer from depression find it difficult to reach their goals because of having low self-esteem. They will always think negatively that they cannot do it, thus hindering their thinking capacity which will make them to not trust in themselves that they can accomplish their goals hence they will at the end not achieving them at all.

Because of fear of having depression, they can also end up not reaching their planned activities as stress make them to lose focus in what they want to do and how they are going to get there. Depression makes them to isolate themselves from others. By doing so, they cannot explore things outside like peoples ideas, experiences and motivational speakers because of lack of interaction with them. If they cannot explore outside then they will lack what can motivate them to push even harder to get to their destination and thus end up delaying their plans and not reaching their goals. Self-criticism also limits their abilities because they will always have doubts about themselves. If they have something in mind, they will not take action to pursue it because they will criticize their ideas thinking they are wrong. According to Pompili M., Girardi P., Lester D. and Tatarelli R. (2010), young people always doubt themselves a lot because they do not believe in themselves and think that their opinions are fault so there is no need to go on. Also, their planned goals end up not being attained because an individual may be gay or lesbian. An individual may be attractive to the same gender. He or she may be depressed if the surrounding he is living in is not supportive of who he is. He may not be able to have freedom to do what he wants and be able to pursue and fulfill his dreams because he will fear being looked down upon and being judged by members in his community.

Depression do not just build in an individual but it comes because of what has happened that would make that person weak and emotionally hurt. Death of a loved and closed member may cause that. A person whom one shared a very close relationship with and regarded him or her as a role model or a mentor if that person dies, one will definitely have that fear inside of her and feel lonely more especially if he or she deepened on that individual. Having massive debts leads to depression especially when the person is jobless to pay all his or her debts. That will again contribute to stress which will then make him or her depressed. Due to fail in relationships in young people leads them to be depressed also because one maybe had plans and thoughts of living forever in future with his or her partner, and when it does not work out, he or she will be emotionally hurt and down more over if the other partner spent a lot of money on his or her spouse thinking that they will be forever. Peer pressure is another big cause of depression. This is because an individual may be forced to do something that he or she is not able to do but has to just because they want to fit in for example smoking, being forced to get into relationships when they are not ready and going to parties. This puts them in dilemma as they will not want to ruin their friendships and at the same time not wanting to disappoint them. According to Beck T.A. and Alford A.B. (2009), one big cause of depression in young people is failing more especially in school or tertiary for example if a student fail and discontinue. This will cause him to be depressed as he will have to retake the failed module and thus having to pay for his studies or their parents having to pay for them. This will become even worse if their parents are not working to help them pay for their studies and continuing with school again, hence this causing them to behave differently increasing the risk of developing depression.

Because of having this serious illness in them, these individuals may lose focus either in school or at work. They will be less productive in their work because of overthinking too much. Students in school will pay less attention during lessons and thus not end up performing well. Some will use drugs and drink too much alcohol as a way of trying to avoid the trauma. Some will overdose their prescribed medication leading to them getting sick and or die because of overdosing. A depressed person usually lose appetite. This means that they may eat less food or not eat at all for a long period of time. He or she interacts less with people even the ones he may know or does not interact at all. Losing interest in things an individual used to enjoy doing the most, some lack energy to do things and would at times feel tired and helpless. Students perform very poor in school in their academics when this happens. Feeling of sadness meaning that they spend a lot of time being unhappy. For instance, some cry for no good reason because they are not happy, their mood changes; sometimes they become happy while at other times they get irritated easily and may get angry over small things.

Depression is indeed a serious concern, especially among young people, and if left unchecked, it can really rule our planet, so we’d better fight it before it fights us. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this serious illness unless we can prevent. This is through seeking out help from social workers for counseling, reaching out to close family and friends you trust and getting treated at the earliest sign of depression to help prevent it from worsening. According to Knaus J.W. (2006), an individual can even try to go to churches and get spiritual deliverance from prophets.
