Education in the World: Analysis of the Drawbacks of Indian Education
Introduction
Education is the science and art of imparting information which becomes knowledge and converts into wisdom. Education gives us knowledge of the world around us, so that we could change it into something better. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. It helps us build opinions and have points of view on things in life (Doumbia, 2013). Education can be both formal and informal, but unfortunately, most of the people relate education to formal education.
Education in the world
The education status across is in such a situation wherein more than 150 million children ages 3 to 5 have no access to primary education. Only 1% of the total fund allocated to early childhood development goes to education at pre-primary level(UNESDOC Digital Library , n.d.). Along with this, the countries with conflict have less than 5% of the total population of children access to primary education. But the good news is that aid to early childhood development has increased to $6.8 billion in 2016 from $1.3 billion in 2002. (Global Partnership for Education, n.d.)
Education in India
Article 45 of the Constitution of India gives the citizens of India the Right to Education, wherein all children of the age 6 -14 are eligible for free education. Hence Right to Education was declared a fundamental right. (Thiruvengadam, January 2004) The literacy rate in India has improved drastically improved since 2000. The countrys expenditure on education as percentage of GDPhad gone up from 4.10% in 2012-13 to 4.13% (provisional) in 2013-14. The Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR) in Universities and Colleges is 30 if regular mode enrolment isconsidered whereas PTR for Universities and its Constituent Units is 20 for regular mode.(Ministry of Human Resource Development, 2017-2018)
Drawbacks of education in India
Indian education system is mostly criticised and the reasons behind it are many. Problems like unqualified faculties, poor infrastructure, no counsellors, out dated educational stuff are the few problems which can still be cured by government by pooling in more funds in the education system. But problems like flock mentality or traditional favourite career goals are still restricting Indian economy to have human resource from all the sectors. Adding on to this, other problems like mere focus on scoring high marks and neglecting the importance practical exposure and other innate skills are making the situation even worse. AI in general
AI has the ability to not only positively improve the lives of people and impact economies worldwide, but also create challenges. (Grosz, 2018) AI has already made its way into a number of spectrums of our lives including healthcare, education, banking, technology, retail, business, etc. and in no time, AI has established a prominent place in our daily lives. We define machine learning as a subfield of artificial intelligence that includes software able to recognize patterns, make predictions, and apply the newly discovered patterns to situations that were not included or covered by their initial design. (Kerr, 2017)
In India
AIs influence on India is no different as compared with other developed and developing nations. In India too, people have high expectations from AI and are looking for a great disruption in current status quo. Here, 71% people believe that AI will help in solving complex problems and will help them in living richer lives with superior lifestyles. 58% to 74% people believe that it would lead to growth in the economy and would improve the standards of cyber security and health conditions. In the business and corporate world too many leaders believe that AI advisors will be much more effective and efficient (Artificial intelligence in India – hype or reality, 2019).
AI in education
AI promises to enhance education at all levels, especially by providing personalization at scale, via teaching robots, intelligent tutorial systems (ITS) and online learning, and learning analytics, although it is established that AI cannot replace human teachers. (Peter Stone, 2016) Along with all this AI can also, point out areas of improvement in running educational curriculums by analyzing the market demand, it can ease down the process of grading, and also how basic learning and value education can form a new pathway altogether.
