In Hinton’s book, The Outsiders, are rival gangs; this was very similar to what was going on at Will Rogers High School where she attended. The decade Hinton grew up in was based on her writing in, The Outsiders. Hinton wrote during a time where there were not many female authors, because of that, she used her initials so she is not criticized for being a woman. Hinton shows her life in her writing by showing the parallel abuse she felt, and the time period the story is in. When Hinton was growing up in the 60s, women authors were criticized and not many people read them. When Hinton was younger, she wanted to become a cattle rancher. After Hinton’s first book was published and released some people did not like it, but the book still sold 4 million copies in the United States. Hinton used The Outsiders to talk about her teen years. There were Greasers and Socs in Hinton’s book The Outsiders and at the high school she attended.
In Hinton’s book The Outsiders, she talks about how the Socs and Greasers were violent, and also the type of clothes they wore. Greasers would always act tuff and strong, the Socs are opposite of the Greasers they are a higher social ecenomic class then they are. They acted like they owned the town.
Greasers are different, they are a lower class and some of them do not have parents, but all of them still care for each other. Greasers and Socs are just labels they were given, there name does not define who they really are. We wear our hair long and dress in blue jeans and T-shirts, or leave our shirttails out and wear leather jackets and tennis shoes or boots. (The Outsiders: S.E. Hinton. What teens ate in the 60s is what the characters in The Outsiders when Johnny and Ponyboy had to run away. When new food came into the 60s it gave the decade something else to be remembered for. The Greasers had a different more slick back hairstyle than the Socs. The hairstyles in the book are different from the present day hairstyles. The Greasers hairstyle with there clothes mad them have more of a tuff look that a nice formal look like a Soc. Their difference in wardrobe and style makes The Outsiders an more interesting book to read. All of the family food, clothes and hairstyles play a part in Hinton’s life and reminds her of her violent past. Hinton went to darker times in her life and put them in her writing. This was a very unusual type of writing for this tim period. It is obvious that her style of writing is what made her book very popular during this time. Hinton wrote from a boys point of view. She had darkness in her life and was tired of reading cookie-cutter teenage novels. She was able to express a real-life situation that maybe other teens could relate to. The book took place in the same era the writer wrote it. Hinton’s life was dark, so the stories she wrote were dark as well. Hinton wrote this story when she was the same age as the characters in the story. The 60s brought clothes and hairstyles that changed from the previous decade. It added elegance to its fashion. As in many stories she still wrote about the good guys and the bad guys.
