Where and How Do I See Myself in 5 Years: Essay

In five years, I see myself in one of the schools in my town as the worst teacher anyone could ever imagine. One that the students will never forget because of the impact I have had on their lives. A rare teacher that any student would ask for another year, perhaps a decade of being their mentor. A teacher that every student would ask for, that’s what I wanted to become in five years.

Many people would think of my idealism about being a great teacher as hopeless. Yet, it is not far impossible to achieve. I grew up in a poor place and had limited resources in terms of education, but because I encountered a lot of worst teachers, I have learned the most essentials and probably the only things we need to learn. In learning, I have discovered three things that I won’t ever forget in my entire life. One is that learning is of any form. As a man filled with curiosity, I hadn’t thought of this until I noticed the boring system of education. I know that school is the environment needed for learning, but as experienced by most people, especially me, there are a lot more ways to learn than just sitting properly, listening to lectures, and raising hands when called. I see classrooms as an unchanging structure of education since the time we all could remember. Secondly, grades are only an evaluation of performance not learning. It is quite debatable, isn’t it? Let me explain my point. People nowadays are short-term learners, and as a man of my philosophy, what is learning a decade or two from now? In simple words, according to psychology, an hour after your study, 50% of the content you have studied will vanish and the other half remains, by five hours, only 20% remains. This can be proven by any experiment if you would like to know it yourself. Thus, what’s the point of calling it learning when you will probably forget it after some time? Lastly, everyone is intelligent. There is a famous quote by Albert Einstein that states, Everybody’s a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. Everyone has their own way of learning, which is why a systematic learning environment cannot satisfy the needs of every student. Hence, if all personal bits of intelligence are catered to by the school, then we can conclude that everyone can show their true performance based on learning in a lifelong process.

Moreover, five years from now, I will be a competitive professional raised in a competitive school with quality learning that will suffice my idea of being the worst teacher. I will gratefully teach my students the importance of these three things I have learned in my learning journey and will inculcate to their minds their uniqueness in their own and that learning is a lifelong process that everyone, not one is exempted, will experience. I would like to raise myself as a man that will cater to every bit of intelligence of my students and not be swallowed by the educational system to give them the attention they want. I would allow myself to be a learner-centered teacher and would ensure that every student I handle will learn a thing or two in my advisory that will remain for the rest of their lives.

Consequently, a teacher is a person whose main role is to mold a student’s life. It is up to them if they can change anyone’s life by being a committed and professional influencer with excellence and a great sense of leadership. To assist students with relevant information, they need to proceed in their lives. What’s more fun and trivial than having the worst teacher? What’s more fun and trivial in having me as a teacher five years from now?
