Why Obesity is a Growing Cause in the U.S.

Obesity is currently a major issue in the United States due to social media, technology, and everyday life, which needs to be controlled because it can eventually lead from minor to major health issues. Obesity is the condition if being overweight; a condition characterized by excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body. Obesity has become a serious health problem in the United States (US): nearly 35% of Americans have obesity. Obesity is not just a problem of girth control; it is now considered a chronic disease by the American Medical Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American College of Endocrinology, the Endocrine Society, the Obesity Society, the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). (Gonzalez-Campoy MD, PhD, FACE, J. 2019) Lifestyle changes and minimizing technology intake can help with the growing numbers of obesity.

Social media and technology has a huge impact on the growing number of obesity, especially in children. Between the food ads, pop ups, and food videos that come up while on sites such as Facebook and Instagram, people are influenced and almost pressured into trying out what they see. In addition, YouTube is a video site a lot of children have been drawn to, where they are able to search and find whatever it is they are interested in to watch. Technology is constantly changing and getting more popular causing people to become lazier and more dependent on what technology has to offer. With the current development of digital technologies, especially mobiles and tablets, the daily average use has been increasing among children, youth and adults. Progressively prevalent social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, WeChat, etc.) have altered many aspects of our daily lives. Consequently, the structure of childrens lifestyle in terms of social media usage has also changed. (Khajeheian, D., Colabi, A. M., Ahmad Kharman Shah, N. B., Bt Wan Mohamed Radzi, C. W., & Jenatabadi, H. S. (2018, June 26).)

Everyday life and routines plays another part in obesity. The average working individual who has a desk job, sitting for 8 hours per day, with minimal exercise or movement, plus, more than likely snacking in between, is probably the person who is gaining more weight than a nurse who is constantly on her feet getting movement from dealing with patients all day.

If changes are not made to avoid and reduce obesity, one will begin to notice themselves beginning to have health issues. Health effects, lifestyle, and psychological effects related to obesity can modify ones life. An individual who is overweight is often suffering from additional health issues that do not allow them to live a long, healthy lifestyle.
