Emotional Experience and Self-Regulation at Work
Selfregulation involves the ability to understand and recognize ones own emotions and be aware of the effect your actions can cause, and therefore regulate them. It involves expressing oneself at the right time (Siregar et al., 2018). It consists of being flexible to change and managing conflict in difficult situations. In this situation self regulation as a domain of emotional intelligence was mismanaged.
I allowed the patients family to use the wheelchair belonging to the physical therapy department, claiming that it looked faster. I feared that the family would become violent if I deny them. I understood that the violence the patients family could cause would affect me emotionally. I requested the nurse assistant to escort them using the unit wheelchair. Still, the nurse resisted saying that she was not to accompany anyone and that the family should use the physical therapist departments wheelchair. After the nurse refused to accompany the family to their car, I allowed the clients to use the wheelchair they demanded, and they ended up stealing it. I failed to take responsibility by explaining that they were supposed to be using the unit wheelchair given to them and not the physical therapy departments wheelchair.
To create a positive outcome, now that the family was demanding to use the other wheelchair, which to them looked faster, and after the nurse assistant refused to go with them, I would have helped them get the patient to the car myself using the given unit wheelchair.
Knowing this new information, I now can handle the situation differently by not allowing people to do what they demand. Additionally, I would look for another nurse to escort the patient to the familys car or escort the patient myself. I would also make sure I do not let the family go by themselves, using any wheelchairs.
