Kate Chopin, who was born in 1850 and died in 1904, is an American author. The Awakening and shorts stories like ‘A Pair of the Silk Stockings’ and ‘The Story of an Hour’ are well-known works for her. She was a strong champion of feminism and language, continuously bringing into question the state of freedom in America at the turn of the century. Imagine a society where women struggle for unprecedented freedoms, an unpredictable economic environment, and every year new technological advances are made. Although this environment can sound like nowadays, it represents America in the 1890s as well. It was in this environment that the writer Kate Chopin lived and wrote her short story, ‘ The Story of An Hour, ‘ which represents several problems of that time. Currently, this is still one of the most popular stories of Kate Chopin and continues to spotlight the internal struggle of women that have been prohibited autonomy.
The reader is able to see two women with certain common characteristics in Kate Chopin’s ‘The Storm’ and ‘The Story of an Hour.’ The stories are a special story with a married couple in different conditions. The stories are unique that talk about a married couple in different situations. Calixta, Bobinôt, and his son, Alcée, and his wife, Clarisse, are the characters of ‘The Storm’ story. On the other hand, Brently and Brently Mallard, the sister of Louise Josephine, and the friend of Brently, Richards, are the characters from ‘The Story of an Hour’. While the same author wrote both stories, they are different in several variations. Although the theme at the time of marriage in ‘The Storm’ is hidden cheating, the theme of ‘The Story of an Hour’ is the key to happiness that the woman knows when her husband has died. Both stories have the concept of forced marriage life, in which the couple becomes joined together, and in either case, the two women have a secret desire for freedom. Calixta of ‘The Storm’ and Louise of ‘The Story of an Hour’ are both, married to husbands they didn’t love. We may consider aspects of both writings that are similar to each other. It would be useful to examine both stories by analyzing and contrasting them with such Literary elements as the plot, background, and Dramatic Irony.
‘ The Story of the Hour ‘ by Kate Chopin and ‘ The Yellow Wallpaper ‘ by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, contain very similar concepts. They both took place in the 1800s when women were controlled by men. ‘During the 1800s the only expectation of women was to cook, keep house, bear and raise their children.’ (ukessays.com, 2018). Both women had their husbands in control which made them have a deep need for independence and freedom. However, as a result of their personal characteristics, both women in the stories have different lives and various responses to their own freedom. These stories have distinct aspirations for the characters, Madame Loisel and Mrs. Mallard each found happiness for a short period of time that finished quickly. The pictures and symbols of both stories are better utilized by Kate Chopin and Guy de Maupassant. Two separate women who don’t want to stay under the control of their husband that is presented in Chopin and Guy de Maupassant’s stories. Madame Loisel is fooled by the social norms of that period in ‘The Necklace.’ Mrs. Mallard’s freedom is attributed to the constraints of her relationship in ‘The Story of an Hour.’ She knows she loves her husband but feels guilty that his death means freedom and independence. The roles of husbands are a little different in both stories. The husband is very helpful and loving in ‘The Necklace’. However, It is impossible to determine what the husband was in ‘The Story of an Hour’ but we know that he was locking the freedom of his wife. It is quite obvious that both Kate Chopin and Guy de Maupassant use creativity, irony, and narrative twists in both short stories to give messages about the liberation of women, social expectations, ambition, tragedy, and inherent wishes of two women, which only come about for a short period.
A funeral is a formal gathering where people cared and acquaintances express their goodbye to those who died. Naturally, we undergo a really painful and emotional experience, a challenging period as we witness a beloved’s passing. It allows one to live with the loss of a loved one by remembering the passage in a structured service. People also exchange fond memories of the one they beloved, encouraging each other to find value in life and death’s wonders. In this way, during a tough and often upsetting moment, friends and relatives support each other. On the other hand, a jazz funeral is where people celebrate the life of the dead person almost as much as grieving the passing of the individual. The street is filled with people and music.
