How Diet Soda Intake Increases Waist Circumference of Older Adults
The article by Fowler, Williams, and Hazuda was published in the Journal of the American geriatrics society and seeks to address how diet soda intake is associated with long-term increases in waist circumference in a bi-ethnic cohort of older adults. As a result of obesity being linked with cardiovascular diseases, the article tried to establish the contribution of diet soda intake to obesity using a multiethnic group of participants. The studys results indicated that exposure to diet soda increased the probability of abdominal obesity and, therefore, increased the likelihood of cardiovascular problems. The articles reference list gives the study credibility. The authors work in the Department of Medicine at the University of Texas health science center also makes them credible as authors of the article. The preliminary analysis of the study was also presented at the scientific sessions for the American Diabetes Association.
The article by Peters et al. in the obesity research journal seeks to establish the effects of water and non-nutritive sweetened beverages on weight loss during a 12-week weight loss treatment program. In this study, a randomized trial was conducted involving 303 men and women. These individuals were taking place in a 12-week weight loss program, and water and NNS beverages were introduced, with the results being recorded. Using the results, this study determined the effectiveness of either component in aiding weight loss. The article answered the question of whether water was superior to NNS beverages in weight loss which were confirmed as false. The credibility is seen in the reputation of the article authors as well as the medium it was published in. In addition, the study was funded by the American Beverage Association.
