Human Resources Management in Global Business
Human resource management (HRM) is a crucial part of any business venture. It can be viewed as a process and activities relating to staffing, training and development of employees, performance evaluation, and compensation (476). Each of these areas of HRM is key to the efficient functioning of global business. Specifically, staffing and employee development are critical and are interrelated with the overall global business strategy.
Staffing is the process of finding suitable employees for vacant positions in the company. Thus, it can be concerned with the selection of individuals with an appropriate skill level for specific jobs within the organization (478). Depending on the goals and objectives of the company, the staffing policy can be focused on a variety of criteria, such as previous experience, behavioral patterns, beliefs, or value systems.
Management and employee training programs can result in the value of the companys human capital being further developed, translating into better organizational outcomes. A distinction should be made between management and employee training and development. Training is focused on individuals employed by the firm enhancing their skills, while development is aimed at the organization achieving its strategic goals (486). Thus, staffing is the first step, while training and development strategies of both managers and employees are viewed as the next critical step in HRM.
Both staffing and training and development are correlated with the companys overall business strategy. Such a strategy can be defined as a method of organizing the activities within the venture, including those relating to human resources (323). Therefore, staffing, training, and development programs are expected to reflect the needs created by the companys business strategy in the global market as employees substantially contribute to company profitability and success.
In summary, HRM practices reflect the position and the needs of the organization. As the first step in HRM, staffing is responsible for filling the positions of the business venture with employees that meet the stated company requirements. Meanwhile, the training and development step promotes the hired employees skills and ensures the organizations strategic goals are met. All HRM practices, including staffing, training, and development, should align with the ventures overall business strategy.
