Leadership Styles in Nursing: Which to Choose?
Leadership styles in the healthcare sphere are an important issue that needs to be thoroughly studied so as healthcare workers to be ready to follow innovations and adapt to various situations. While working with other health personnel and being crucial for patients safety and comfort, nurses are considered to be an essential group in leadership. Regarding leadership styles used within my clinical setting, I identify them as participatory leadership and laissez-faire leadership.
Firstly, participatory leadership is related to relational leadership style, which is associated with organizational commitment and stress reduction. In particular, participatory leadership means that all the individuals views are taken into account (Durmu_ & K1rca, 2020). I feel that my opinion is being listened to, and, as a consequence, I think this is the type of my leader. Secondly, laissez-faire leadership style is also presented within the clinic. It is associated with task-focused leadership, which puts the main emphasis on objectives. This style means that the leader recognizes full freedom and provides little control (Durmu_ & K1rca, 2020). Thus, it can be said that the leadership styles presented in my workplace are similar as they emphasize nurses opinions and gives them freedom. However, the second style may suggest that the leader is not experienced enough as the leader should be capable of inspiring and driving people (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). As for me, I would want to be a resonance leader since it requires high emotional intelligence and the ability to find solutions to problems, which seems to be extremely captivating.
To conclude, the need for nurses with developed leadership skills is growing, and, consequently, styles that are implemented in practice should be analyzed. The leadership styles presented within my clinical setting differ slightly, but both imply a great degree of freedom. In addition, I prefer resonance leadership that refers to relational leadership style and takes into consideration employees satisfaction and improvement of staff well-being and health.
