Summary

It could be seen from the conversation that Tyler demonstrates some good leadership skills. When speaking to Gus, Tyler makes it apparent that he has to communicate with Gus about his interactions with the other employees at the organization. Guss job behavior appears to be inappropriate and intrusive to the other workers personal lives, according to the complaints Tyler has received. Tyler does the best he can by approaching Gus with this topic in a positive manner while also correcting these behaviors. Tyler reassures Gus that he is not being chastised and that he is doing an excellent job.

Although this conversation could be difficult for both Tyler and Gus, the outcomes of the conversation are fruitful. It was found out he has Aspergers syndrome and that could be the reason for his specific behavior at the workplace. This case makes the situation more complex because several factors should be admitted by the leader. First, the leader should be supportive and demonstrate empathy. However, he also needs to help Gus not to feel different from the other workers. Finally, Tyler, as a coach, is required to do all the possible to help his employee to perform as effective professionals. According to the textbook, the leader should focus not only on the result but on the personal characteristics and traits that could help make the work process more efficient (DuBrin, 2015, p. 27). Tyler showed all the intrapersonal and soft skills that were crucial for achieving those tasks. Gus felt more revealed and motivated, and Tyler made the situation with his unprofessional behavior of Gus clear and gave him the needed guidance.

Alternative Message

One of the important messages that could be taken from the analysis of the conversation is that leaders should demonstrate more empathy towards other employees and think not only about the business results but about the human factor too. It is important to keep in mind that people might have different reasons for behaving in a particular way. That was the case for Gus when many of his colleagues were complaining about him without knowing the possible reasons for his actions. Tyler made the right choice by having a conversation with Gus in order to reveal the causes of his behavior. Sometimes people, in this regard, employees need support from others and especially from the leader, as he or she has authority, knowledge, and practical experience.
