LPN and RN; Standards of Practice

The main difference between licensed practical nurses (LPN) and registered nurses (RN) is the education required. RN course takes two or three years to get a degree or diploma, while the LPN standard only demands a year of studies and a certificate (Wisconsin Administrative Code, 2018). Education determines the set of nursing procedures for LPN and RN. As a rule, the LPN follows the orders of the RN and is allowed to perform the limited number of duties that one is competent enough to act (Wisconsin Administrative Code, 2018). These duties include basic daily care procedures as pulse or blood pressure taking, chart recording, and assisting RNs in their duties.

Registered nurses have a lot more responsibilities and are allowed to work independently. According to Wisconsin Legislative Document (2018) and the standards mentioned in it, these responsibilities include collecting and analyzing data, making a plan of care, and evaluating the progress in patient condition. Thus, the tasks that the RN deals with are more complex and claim the presence of critical thinking skills and leadership abilities.

Both LPN and NR are one team, and they should work their best to maintain the needed care for a patient. Thus, the demands for a nurse position are high and are aimed at improving patient care. Moreover, understanding the qualifying standards allows nurses to develop professionally. It gives the outline of individual skills the qualified professional should develop. Only then a person as a member of the local environment can fulfill ones potential and be of great public convenience.
