Mia Mottleys Speech at the Opening of the #COP26 World Leaders Summit
Mia Mottley, the Prime Minister of Barbados, made a speech at the Opening of the #COP26 World Leaders Summit of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow. She explained the possibility of climate change becoming irreversible if the temperature increased by two degrees Celsius (UN Climate Change, 2021). The speech illustrated her great organization as she called on nations to unite in providing an exact amount of capital to combat rapid climate change. She referred to specific countries around the equator that would be majorly affected by the rising global temperature if the nations at the summit did not devise an amicable solution (UN Climate Change, 2021). PM Mottleys capacity to shine a light on the role of leaders to help their citizens by providing a long-term solution to dealing with climate change elicits emotions. She does not blame any government for the climate change issues faced in contemporary society but calls on the UN body to work together with new nations seeking a bright future.
PM Mottleys speech is powerful as she subtly warns nations of the impending catastrophe for all countries if the COP26 summit does not elicit a proper plan to deal with climate change. Nonetheless, PM Mottley should not use coded language when referring to the devastating nature of rising global temperatures. She should mention the damaging results that disagreement at the #COP26 would bring. The Prime Minister should have mentioned various countries with the capacity to sway votes within the UN, such as the USA. Thrusting such nations in the spotlight would help promote her message as they are better positioned to propagate these changes. Failing to hold governments accountable and using a general approach to address nations allows them to shuck their duties towards the world if they are not in their countries interests. However, PM Mottley made an excellent speech that would prompt the audience to look for ways that would help alleviate climate change due to its logical and critical nature.
