Orems Self Care Theory: Review
Introduction
According to the provided article, health professionals have had gratifying experience when working with patients suffering from chronic diseases like arterial hypertension (Manzini & Simonetti, 2009). Currently, care for patients with chronic diseases is not well organized. It mainly focuses on medical assistance with no initial participation of nurses. Studies executed previously have explored diverse themes employing Orems Self Care Theory. Orems theory is relevant in diverse contexts. It can be used in developing nursing practices. Studies, which have used the theory, include a study that identified diagnoses processes among high risk pregnant women. It showed benefits of nursing process and the need to encourage self-care. Another study explored benefits of encouraging self-care after bone marrow transplantation (Manzini & Simonetti, 2009). This study endeavors to institute a nursing process by utilizing nursing consultation procedures founded on Orems Self-Care Theory.
Purpose of Study
The purpose of this study was to find a way of applying nursing consultation in the treatment of hypertensive clients. The objective was to apply Orems Self-Care theory in the process of consultation and then systematize the nursing care (Manzini & Simonetti, 2009).
Methods
From the provided article, Research Ethics Committee stationed at Botucatu Medical School, UNESP, managed to ratify this investigative research/study. Through remarkable help from a government agency, the study was executed at a teaching health center. The health facility was located in Sao Paulo State in Brazil. The medical team referred hypertensive patients who were under care in the facility for nursing consultations. This was done before the study began and nursing consultation alternated with medical consultations. These appointments with patients had agenda that had been set. Data collection consumed 6 months. Concurrently, 845 medical consultations were executed in order to prove the designed hypothesis (Manzini & Simonetti, 2009). After medical consultations, 94 patients were scheduled to undergo nursing consultations. Unfortunately, 34 of those scheduled for nursing consultations did not attend the meetings. The remaining 60 patients were attended to by the researcher.
Results
Population of study was 55 patients. The majority comprised women (58.9%). Individuals who were married composed 76.4% with whites constituting 92.6% of the population (Manzini & Simonetti, 2009). Individuals aged between 50 and 80 years formed 75%; housewives formed 42.9% while those who have not completed elementary education formed 67.3% of the population (Manzini & Simonetti, 2009). Nursing diagnoses fronts remarkable effects on the development as well as health deviation stipulations. From the article, it is evident that maintenance of life and promotion of functional people are the conventional requisites. This dictated the execution of physical assessment while considering devastating life habits. The development requirements concern conditions that can enable change throughout lifetime and that can enable adjustment (Manzini & Simonetti, 2009). Health deviations are due to diseases, disability, and treatment that patients need to enable recovery (Duffy, 2009). The data portrayed contemporary complaints patients possessed as well as their insights regarding the disease.
Conclusion
Analysis of the requirements detected self-care deficits related to underfeeding, overweight, poor control of stressful situations, lack of control of blood pressure, and ineffective management of pharmacological therapy. However, all these are critical in the management of arterial hypertension and in its prevention. Further, the study verified the importance of supportive education for patients. This education guides and prepares patients to learn self-care. Thus, the study assures the effectiveness of applying Orems theory in developing nursing practice for the management of patients with arterial hypertension.
