Upon selecting a profession that will most likely be a part of ones life for quite a long time, it is critical to learn about its detail and determine whether it is suitable for a personality. Based on these reasons, the following career research paper will examine an occupation of a registered nurse. Moreover, a comparison of required traits with personal characteristics will provide a substantial outlook of a jobs relevance to individual features.

Career Description

Registered Nurses (RN) occupations offer an assortment, professional security, and a feeling of individual satisfaction. The professions primary responsibilities include evaluating patient medical conditions and needs, creating and executing nursing care plans, and keeping up clinical records (Registered Nurses, 2016). Additionally, registered nurses provide direct nursing care to patients and further prompt patients on wellbeing support and disease prevention or provide case management.

The occupation places may include hospitals, physicians offices, home healthcare services, and nursing care facilities (Registered Nurses: Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2020). Others work in outpatient clinics and schools. The registered nurses must be accountable for specific skills, including psychological assessment abilities, such as social perceptiveness and active listening skills. Other expertise must include service orientation, extroversive character, intelligence to read work-related information, adaptivity, and critical thinking (Registered Nurses, 2016). Therefore, being a registered nurse also comprises the ability to understand people and develop adequate solutions.

Personality Strengths that Match this Career

According to the 16personalities assessment, my personality type is Assertive executives, who are traditional and orderly leaders, using their awareness of what is right, wrong, and socially appropriate to bring people and communities together (NERIS Analytics Limited, 2013). The assessment stated that I am an extroverted individual, which is a significant strength in a registered nurse profession, as we must interact with patients daily.

Another strong trait of my personality is being observant, focusing on the environment, and practical decisions. This trait helps RN find the most beneficial solutions and continuously stay focused on the job. A thinking feature of the personality is also fundamental as I choose to reason over feelings. It is critical to remain rational in decision-making while working as an RN.

In other traits, the test showed that I am a judging individual, stating my high decisiveness and self-organization. Obtaining this feature as a registered nurse provides planning ahead and always staying put up and organized, critical in the nursing field. The last strength in my personality that matches my career is assertiveness, which makes me resistant to stress. They set goals and want to achieve them, but they usually dont let their nerves get in the way of their performance, which is highly valued in healthcare.

I have always been interested and eager to help those in need. My background of volunteering at church, clothing, and food drives substantiates how I feel towards others. Being able to help people fulfills me and allows me to leave a mark on somebodys life. Knowing that as a registered nurse, I will not only be helping patients but also saving others lives drives my desire to pursue this career.

Benefits of working as a registered nurse include the high job demand, as the current employment field significantly lacks qualified nurses. Moreover, there is plenty of opportunity for advancement, as the career offers significant growth in the healthcare field. Most importantly, the profession of being a registered nurse allows to help people in need and to save their lives. Such an advantage is superbly fulfilling and the most gratifying aspect of the work.

Despite many advantages, there are some downsides to the profession. Nurses are among the most trusted healthcare occupations, but they are also one of the most undervalued and marginalized. Additionally, dealing with troublesome or uncomfortable patients is a daily fact in the nursing profession, and not all patients desire or outwardly value your assistance. There is also high emotional pressure on registered nurses, as you see patients die or suffer, challenging ones mental health.

Pay and Job Outlook

A registered Nursing job is a well-paid job, which depends on the position and place of occupancy. In May 2019, the median annual income for registered nurses was $73,300 (Registered Nurses: Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2020). There is a positive job outlook for this profession. Employment is expected to rise by 7% between 2019 and 2029, faster than the average for all occupations (Registered Nurses, 2020). Increased focus on preventive care, the rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity, and demand for healthcare services from the baby-boom generation, who live a longer and more active life.

Educational Requirements

The educational requirements for the registered nurse occupation include a mandatory degree in nursing. Candidates must hold at least an associate degree in nursing, but many RNs go on to receive a bachelors or masters degree (Registered Nurses, 2016). After obtaining a degree, an applicant must pass the National Council Licensure Test for Registered Nurses to receive state licensure. Depending on their state, nurses may be required to meet additional licensure requirements.
