Romeo and Juliet’: Persuasive Letter

The internet defines love as an intense feeling of deep affection. So why does Romeo fall for Juliet after being let down by Rosaline? Romeo knows that love can be tragic, but it makes him happy. Romeo and Juliet are so happy together, Juliet would rather die than not be with Romeo. Readers also learn from the friar that love is not just looks and that things can be on a more personal and intellectual level. Love also can be platonic, not romantic. This is shown by Juliet’s love for her cousin Tybalt. With this it makes love seem powerful. Whether that’s good, or bad. However for the reader, whether this is good or bad is up to the individual. To some the chance that the worst will come is worth it, and that the happiness they feel in the moment is great.

Romeos first love in this story was Rosaline, Romeo describes her as ‘The all-seeing sun ne’er saw her match since first the world begun'(Shakespeare I.3.99-100). From this readers learn that Romeo finds Rosaline beautiful. As Romeo learns about Rosaline, he learns that a relationship with her would be what he wanted in a relationship. So despite his love at first sight, he realized forgoing a relationship wouldn’t make him happy. Even though he was sad at the moment of his realization of this, he knew this was an opportunity to meet someone compatible. After this event, Romeo and his friends suck into a Capulet masquerade party. This is where Romeo met Juliet. After the party, both Romeo and Juliet longed to see each other. Even after learning that they were from different houses. Their love stayed strong and they couldn’t keep their hands off each other they were so in love. They were happy. After Romeo killed Tybalt in a duel, Romeo was banished from Verona and never came back. Despite her sorrow over her lost cousin, she wants Romeo to be there. Juliet said that she would rather die than never see Romeo again.

The Friar is an important character in the story of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence is the one who weds Romeo and Juliet. The Friar has an understanding of Love with the good and bad. Friar Lawrence says to Romeo after Romeo tells him that he has a new love, Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here! Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear, So soon forsaken? Young mens love then lies Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes(Shakespeare II.3.69-72). From this, readers learn that Friar Lawrence understands how love, in the beginning, can be purely by looks, but as people age they can lose their looks. With this, Friar is pointing out to Romeo that he is too impulsive, and to quote Friar again, These violent delights have violent ends(Shakespeare II.6.9). This whole time The Friar knows that something tragic can happen. The Friar also compares love to herbs and how when used can be either bad or good. Friar Lawrence knows that love is intellectual, and it needs to be more than love at first sight. This is another reason why love is complex with it having layers. It can be purely romantic, but then it needs to be intellectual, and even have friendship.

In conclusion, Love is like a plant. It needs to have attention, it needs to be nourished, But it’s always changing, it can grow and get sick. Outside influence affects how the plant is, whether that sickness, lack of sunlight, or drought. But it can heal. Love is complex. In a sense, if an individual wants their love to grow and be able to accept that life is a rollercoaster, then it can make them happy. This is why even though Romeo was very upset about Rosaline, he still wanted to be with Juliet as it made both of them very happy, and even though they might live long after, it made them both happy. Friar Lawrence also understands that love, at first sight, might be looking but he realizes what Romeo and Juliet have is more intellectual and not just physical. This is why to some the chance that their love may have the worst will come is worth it, that the happiness they feel in the moment trumps the potential sadness.
