The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime’ Essay on Characters

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – ‘was originally a novel and has been adopted by Simon Stephens into play form. This version of the novel is meant to be seen in a performance. The staging of the play is original and contributes massively to how the audience perceives the events and characters on stage. The play has been performed on two diverse types of stages including an ‘in the round’ and a proscenium arch which means the audience can be much closer to the action happening on stage and probe into the relationship between the characters.

It shows the life of Christopher Boone, a 15-year-old, who is incredible at Maths but finds people confusing. The play begins with Christopher discovering a dead dog in his neighbor, Mrs. Shears’, garden. although his father, Ed warns Christopher not to get involved, Christopher decides to investigate the death of the dog. In doing so he discovers that his mother is not dead as his father had said before, but alive and living in. He then also discovers that it was his father who killed the dog out of anger.

Christopher believes that his father is a murderer, whom he cannot trust and who can no longer live with him so he runs away to to find his mother. Christopher has trouble settling into his new life, so he returns home to Swindon to take his A-level Maths exam. The play closes with him passing the exam and realizing that he can do anything he puts his mind to and focuses on.

Often in – ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the chronology of events is mixed up. The play leaps from the present to the past regularly as well as the location. Christopher can go from a train, to outside a flat, to outer space, at any point and he has.

The curious incident clearly shows it is in the style of physical theatre when various people are playing with objects throughout and using movements to transition between scenes. Physical theatre is a dynamic way of exploring a subtext. It includes a range of body language, choreography, and dance. This style helps when performing on a variety of various stages.

While exploring the play as Siobhan, I discovered that she was narrating the story with some occasional interactions with Christopher, usually about what he wrote in the book. Siobhan was the only character to break the 4th wall, often indirectly interacting with the audience. We have also watched the play within lessons which helped me to understand her place within the play, I also noticed how Siobhan was throughout under a spotlight while the rest of the cast (excluding Christopher) were not. The rest of the play was under blue lighting, and from that I could conclude it reflects upon his mood and the feeling of constant loneliness he’s bound to experience, perhaps Siobhan was under the spotlight as she was the only one exposed to the truth while everyone else only knows what Christopher chooses to share with them.
