The Democratic and Participative Leadership Styles

Introduction

For my future career, I plan on developing and implementing the democratic and participative leadership styles. I believe that this is the most effective way to manage an organization and guide it to success. With this approach, I will be able to encourage the team members to participate in the decision-making process. I want to further develop skills that a good leader needs, as well as my professional knowledge of the field. Healthcare system is complex and without continually evolving one can be left behind. For this improvement, I will be focusing on my business communication skills and my public speaking. I will commit to reading four works on the healthcare and nursing subject a week (books and journal articles) and two works on general leadership principles to help me enhance my management skills.

My first goal for the next five years is to complete the ARNP program and pass the board exam, as it is an essential step in my future work with healthcare professionals. Next, I plan to earn a Masters Degree in Ayurvedic medicine, which is a field of personal interest for me. Finally, I plan to establish a practice where I can combine the Ayurvedic and traditional medicine.

My strategy for achieving those goals is to create a plan of action, summarize a list of things I need to pay particular attention to (such as skills that I need to improve), and communicate closely with my mentor. I have already set the goals for the next five years and identified the professional skills I need to work on to succeed. Additionally, I have found a person that can guide me through the process and help me achieve these goals.

The mentor I have found for myself is a physician from Cuba who is a registered nurse in the US. I chose her to be my mentor because I admire her natural ability to heal people and her compassion for work. I hope that I can learn those things by observing her work and discussing my personal work experiences with this nurse. I believe this will help me improve as a professional and as a leader.

Lesson 47

Lesson 47 discusses the importance of the life and work balance (White & Lindsey, 2015). I agree that before taking on a new job, one must seriously consider all aspects of it to determine whether it is a good fit or not. Waddell et al. (2015) argue that the process of career planning and development is especially important for nursing students, as typically they begin their careers without such knowledge. Additionally, maintaining the balance is extremely important. It is easy to be caught in the daily load of work and skip on family, especially early on in the career. However, the consequences of those actions would be regrettable.

Lesson 48

The recommendation to read two books and two journals related to healthcare and nursing is extremely helpful (White & Lindsey, 2015). In healthcare, updating the knowledge one has is needed to be able to provide patients with the best service possible. Peoples lives depend on the competency of those who work in hospitals. Additionally, to achieve the best career success, it is important to work on non-health related skills. For example, improving business communication or public speaking can be crucial for becoming a good manager in any field. The ideas expressed in lesson 48 give an understanding of why it is essential to learn continually.
