The Hit Pro Examinations

The HIT pro examinations are developed with the objective of evaluating the competency, knowledge and skills of workers in the Health Information Technology (HIT) subsector. Such skills include their ability to change health records from text to electronic form. The HIT pro examinations are divided into six categories in liaison with six health subsectors. These examinations are developed by seasoned HIT practitioners and instructors specializing in the six subsectors representing explicit personnel roles, thus their validity, reliability and legality. These experts have identified relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities to be tested in each of the six examinations. Each examination comprises 125 multiple-choice questions to be done in three hours with a pass mark of 500 on a scale of 600 points.

The first examination targets Practice Workflow and Information Management Redesign Specialists, including unlicensed practitioners. It seeks to evaluate their understanding of the elements involved in workflow processes within a multifaceted healthcare structure. It also examines their competency in facilitating critical decision- making and designing processes that facilitate the exchange of information so as to eradicate shortcomings thus optimize quality healthcare services. The second examination is intended for licensed clinical practitioners and or consultants who are expected to exhibit the same skills as in the first paper, in addition to management information systems and leadership. Their ability to solve workflow and IT implementation challenges is also examined. The third examination is meant for Implementation Managers. They should have a background in health, IT and demonstrate administrative and managerial skills, especially teamwork, in the healthcare sector. They should also recommend appropriate improvements to the software vendors.

The implementation support specialist examination targets health workers with an IT and information management background. They should be able to give technical support like software installation, quality evaluation and link with vendors during the implementation of HIT systems. The fifth examination targets Technical/support staff with a background in IT and information management. It tests their ability to maintain and upgrade systems in line with feedback from product users. Finally, trainer examinations are meant for healthcare specialists with experience in classroom pedagogy.

American citizens with qualifications as discussed above are eligible to register for the HIT professional examinations on the Candidate Registration Website. They receive a full sponsorship voucher, while non-citizens and non-permanent residents will pay $299 for their first attempt. Candidates are assured of their rights before, during and after the examinations.
