The Role of Nurse Leaders in Improving the Quality of Patient Care
Besides advocating for their followers, nurse leaders are also responsible for promoting their workplace vision and being available to their employees. A substantial amount of nurse leadership strives for the integration and development of patient care, formulation and assessment of treatment plans, and leading by example for the newer nursing staff (The University of New Mexico, 2018). Additionally, nurses are responsible for the evaluation of treatment results, staff performance, and the needs of both their employees and patients. Nurses often take part in prevention efforts and policy assessments. Nurse managers and leaders have slightly different roles in the workplace. Nurse leaders are more involved in the day-to-day and specific patient care processes, while nursing managers are more focused on supervision and daily monitoring (The University of St. Augustine, 2020). Nurse managers may even need knowledge o business management and budgeting. The two roles share many qualities and are essential to improved health care and employee well-being in the workplace.
Nurses and nurse leaders play a very significant role in continuous quality improvement in both patient care and the quality of the time the staff spends within health care facilities. In many cases, evidence, outcome, and experience-based implementations by medical staff, especially nursing employees, have led to safety and quality improvement in clinical procedures (Hickey & Giardino, 2019). Firstly, some of these include the discovery that pharmacist-led medication therapy results in a substantial reduction in the total cost of care. Secondly, improved sepsis care has been noted to optimize early recognition (Health Catalyst, 2019). Third, a systematic, data-driven approach to evaluations has resulted in a lower length of stay and better care coordination. These are just three examples of the many changes nursing and other hospital staff can implement over long-term assessments of the current quality of care.
