World War I Aftermath for the United States

Introduction

World War 1 is one of the darkest moments in the modern time. It erupted in 1914 with the world powerful nations forming opposing alliances. The causes of word war1 were among others economic rivalries, competition for colonies in Africa and rising sense of militarism. It effects included death of 8.5 million people, famine, rationing of food and high taxes (Berkowitz, 2004).

The period is also a revolution time in American intellectual, which initiated the progressive era in American history. It also marked the emergent of pragmatic liberalism and devotion to the national purpose. The Great War had it impact in America and its effects are felt even today. The reality of the war brought changes in the social and political arena which are of benefit up to now (Keene, Cornell & ODonnell, 2013).

The war brought a change in the economical and political state of the United States. It brought growth in the war division in the USA. There was the adoption of new diplomatic policies by the government. In addition, it was a crucial period in the liberation of women and black Americans. The war also had a negative impact on United States. The over 350,000 people died in the United States in the war. In addition, almost 35 billion dollars were used in the conflict, and this affected the economy of the U.S. (Berkowitz, 2004).

The main breakthrough on social reform came when congress passed the 19th amendment that allowed women to vote. Previously, women had been barred from jobs. During the war, however, the demand for labor in the industries gave an opportunity to women get jobs. Women were able to express their strength and capabilities, and that they were equal to men. For this reason, President Wilson advised congress to grant women equal rights as men as they had shown they deserved it (Keene, Cornell & ODonnell, 2013).

The industrial production in USA grew during the period. The manufacturers had to keep pace with the high demand for goods to support the war. In order to produce more goods within a short time, new technologies and means of productions were introduced. The new technology was used in production of new weapons which strengthened the US military and are still in use even today. The demand for labor also encouraged movement of the black from the south to the urban area. They were able to access institution such as schools and churches, and this played a vital part in the liberation of the blacks (Keene, Cornell & ODonnell, 2013).

The WW1 also benefited the economy of the U.S. in various ways. The war forced the government to take over industries, and this changed the economic system. After the government took control of industries, the level of unemployment reduced significantly. There was also improvement in working conditions and this improved their performance.

The WW1 also improved political system in the country. The war expanded the government power as it controlled the production of war materials, which was previously under private industries. The war also forced the expansion of the military of U.S. to become the powerful force it is today.

In conclusion, despite the negative impacts of the WW1 on death and suffering of the people, it was the foundation of many reforms that have shaped the country to what it is today.
