Assignment
Please select one of the Virtual Dance Concert’s below to write about. Your paper should include an introductory paragraph telling the reader what you will be talking about (title, and topics covered in the paper) and a closing paragraph (summing up your ideas). Some of the concerts are one long dance piece and some are a variety of pieces within one performance. If there are various pieces within the concert pick three to write about in your paper. If it is one long dance piece please try to write about the piece in detail for your paper.
While watching the concert try to just absorb the pieces. Write down on a piece of paper a few notes about each piece so you can recall what you watched and to help you write your paper later. Your paper should also include an opening paragraph telling me what you are going to talk about in your paper and a closing paragraph summing up the ideas you put forth in your paper.
Please attach your paper to this Journal by either attaching a word document or pdf in a journal entry, or typing it in a word processing application and inserting your text into a journal entry.
To consider when writing your paper:
Opening paragraph must include name of the event, when and where of performance.
Include a concluding paragraph summarizing your overall opinion of the concert.
Think about the elements of dance when viewing the concert. This will give you something to start with when considering each piece.
Think about the production elements: Were the costumes distracting or enhancing to the choreography? Did the technical support (lighting, music/text, costumes, etc.) generally enhance the performance?
Does the music enhance or detract from the movement?
Watch the choreography – was it repetitious, sparse, sporadic, voluminous, cluttered, etc.?
Think about how you might relate to the piece. Are you reminded of something while watching the piece? Tell me about it. Consider how the piece might relate to real life activities or personal experiences.
Avoid using words like nice, pretty, cool, neat, wonderful, graceful, awesome, to verbalize your responses. Be specific not generic.
Specify names of dancers and artists where appropriate; never refer to performers on a first name only basis. Do not list a roster of performing artists or dancers. Also , do not refer to how the AUDIENCE feels – it is your opinion not theirs.
DO NOT USE
moves (as a noun)
acts, numbers, scene (unless referring to a play or musical)
recital
USE INSTEADmovements, combinations, sequences, phrases
pieces, works , ballets, dances
concert, performance, production
The main purpose of writing a critique is for you to verbalize your opinions, preference, likes, dislikes backed up with good sound logic and reasoning. If you like or dislike something, make certain you state why as well as state constructive criticism as to what methods you would utilize to improve or change what you saw.
The critique is to be written as a formal paper using correct, formal English grammatical style (No Contractions or Abbreviations, quote marks belong outside punctuation, footnotes where necessary, etc. ) Indicate titles of pieces with “quotes” or italics and the title of entire concert with an underline or All Capitals. Write out numbers less than 20 and do not arbitrarily change verbal tense. Read your paper out loud.
Write your review so that the reader knows exactly what you saw and how you felt about it. Do not assume the reader knows anything about what you saw prior to reading your review.
Some dance compositions tell stories; other do no, so do NOT look for hidden messages. Accept the work at face value. Many contemporary compositions are based on line , form , style and should be reviewed as such
