Various environmental health issues emerge as a result of the disaster in the video, such as hurricanes. Hurricanes can impact the environment and cause damage to ecosystems, such as natural habitats for human beings and wildlife. It also causes displacement to people when there is damage to buildings and property, leaving them without any shelter. The occurrence of hurricanes leads to increased water contamination, especially because of stagnant water in different areas (National Geographic, 2011). Flooding will also lead to increased water contamination and pollution of water sources. Additionally, this leads to an increased risk of mold and bacteria. The water will also be more likely to carry waterborne pathogens that will heighten the spread of disease. Another environmental health concern is the increased spread of toxic agents, which can occur through waste and sewage overflow, as well as chemical spillages, which lead to the spread of biotoxic materials into the environment.
The disaster fits into the concept of environmental justice because it is evident that communities face various challenges in management, such as hurricanes. The occurrence of hurricanes usually has a devastating impact on marginalized communities and low-income communities because these communities usually have insufficient infrastructure to deal with the environmental disaster of hurricanes. Various environmental conditions need to be considered for this scenario, and these can be connected to human health (Xu et al., 2022). One is air pollution, which can be seen through exposure to particulate matter in the air during and after a hurricane. It can lead to respiratory problems in the population. Water pollution is another environmental condition, and this occurs through the presence of contaminated water due to hurricanes. It can lead to the spread of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. Biotoxic products are another environmental condition caused by hurricanes, and these include sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide, heavy metals like lead, and PAH, which is a chemical found in floodwater. These may have a significant impact and affect the individual’s health.
Three factors can help inform the analysis and understanding of this environmental disaster. One of these factors is environmental factors, and this can include aspects connected to the natural environment that may prevent or lessen the impact of hurricanes. These include the proximity to land, the water temperature, and ocean currents and winds. These different factors need to be considered in analyzing this disaster because they help reveal the probability or scale of impact of hurricanes as well as the pathway of exposure (Leopold et al., 2022). Social factors can help inform the analysis of this particular disaster. It includes aspects such as community awareness of this disaster. Preparedness is important, as well as role and participation in decision-making. For example, the exposure pathway in this scenario would include public education concerning hurricanes and their impact, as well as mediums that can be used to disseminate information concerning hurricanes. Technological factors can also play a major role in informing the analysis and understanding of this disaster. It includes scientific advancements such as warning systems and communication systems that can provide information concerning hurricanes. It also includes structural measures such as engineering designs and construction practices that can reduce the impact of hurricanes in given areas.
