Textbook: Chapters 7 and 8
Lesson
Initial Post InstructionsFor the initial post, address the following:
1. Consider one of the following current social issues or one of your choice:
Controlling gun violence
Racism
Economic inequality
Sexism
Controlling crime and criminals
Immigration
Financial or military aid to foreign countries
2. State your position on your chosen issue.
Are you for, against, or neutral? Explain why.
Make your position very clear. Avoid vagueness or ambiguity in your response.
3. Examine and explain how you have formed that position or opinion, considering these questions:
How well do you think you know the facts? Do you know and understand any statistical information that applies to the issue?
What part has cognitive bias played in how you have formed your opinions?
Does your argument exhibit the standards of critical thinking?
Remember, the initial post is not about how “correct” your position is; it is about how you arrived at your position on the issue. This discussion requires the application of metacognition—thinking about how you think.
4. By now, you should be able to recognize the type of reasoning you are using. Include one of the following statements at the end of your post. (This statement must be included in your post.)
I have stated my argument inductively. My point (conclusion) is more probable than not. My argument contains no cognitive biases and exhibits the standards of critical thinking.
I have stated my argument deductively. My point (conclusion) is proven. My argument contains no cognitive biases and exhibits the standards of critical thinking.
Follow-up Post InstructionsRespond to at least one peer. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.
1. Critique your peer’s initial post.
In your responses, look for another student’s post, either on the same or a different issue. Choose, where possible, a peer whose initial post has not yet been examined by another student, and examine it.
Examine carefully your thinking in response to your peers, considering these questions:
Use these questions to guide your responses:
What is your initial reaction to the post? Is your initial reaction to your peer, “So, right; you bet!” or “So wrong, you’re all wet!”
Does the post follow the inductive or deductive form specified by the author?
Does it exhibit the standards of critical thinking?
Is it free from cognitive bias and/or fallacies?
What part, if any, has your understanding of the facts played in your response?
What part, if any, has cognitive bias played in your response?
2. Look at responses to your initial post.
Did your peer fairly evaluate you? Discuss this with your peer.
You may find that just the minimum two posts are not sufficient to discover whether you can identify these elements. You will have to make a judgment call: Will you do the minimum two and miss out on the deep thinking required by this exercise, or go beyond the minimum two and really begin to understand your thought processes and the concept of critical thinking?
A very valuable final post would be to discuss your judgment call: perhaps you “got it” in two; perhaps you opted for more than two; perhaps other demands on your time did not allow you to exercise as much deep thinking as you would have liked to do. Perhaps you did not see much value in the discussion—a very valuable final post would be a brief statement of why you found it so. Do not be shy about critiquing the exercise.
Writing RequirementsMinimum of 2 posts (1 initial & 1 follow-up)
Minimum of 2 sources cited in your initial and/or follow-up post (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside source). Mere citations to references at the end of the post do not count. You must show in your post(s) how you relied on or used the cited sources.
APA format for in-text citations and list of references
