Scenario/Summary
When a patient arrives at the ED (emergency department) of the Medical Center of DeVry, demographic and insurance information is obtained. The ED registration clerk checks the facility master patient index (MPI) and either updates information if the patient has previously been treated at the facility or enters the information if this is the patient’s first visit.
The triage nurse takes a medical history and performs an initial clinical evaluation. This information is entered into a computerized ED encounter form and an automated triage system categorizes the patient. The triage systems assign an available ED bed in the bed assignment system. The patient is put on the schedule to be seen by an ED physician. The ED scheduling system tracks a patient in the ED and captures information on diagnosis, treatments, provider interaction, and amount of time a patient spends in the ED. An ED physician sees the patient by schedule order. The physician performs an examination, orders tests, writes prescriiptions, makes a diagnosis, and makes a decision about patient disposition. The ED physician enters medical history, examination information, diagnosis, and patient disposition into the computerized patient EHR system. The ED physician enters medication and test orders into the order-entry system, and orders are automatically routed to the clinical laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy information systems.
Deliverables
Given the above case study, construct a block diagram that shows the boundaries of the ED information system; components of the ED information system; and their relationships, system inputs, outputs, and interface with systems outside the ED information system. You will be creating your block diagram in Microsoft Visio, so be sure to view DeVry’s Introduction to Visio tutorialLinks to an external site. and the Microsoft Visio 2010 TutorialLinks to an external site.. Once you have completed your diagram, submit it. You may a software other than Microsoft Visio, however, it must be pre-approved by your instructor.
The objective of this assignment is to promote an understanding of systems theory: a group of component parts, separated by a boundary from other systems that work and interact with one another to achieve a common goal. After completing this assignment, you should understand that a change in one component will affect other components within the system or outputs that feed other systems.
NOTE: Please check out the various tutorial links regarding Visio in the Web Links section under Course Resources.
There are two ways to access Visio. Students can access Visio through Microsoft Office 365 directly from their web browser (when accessing the University email). Students can also access Microsoft Visio 2019 in the Citrix Workspace lab where the Visio app is located (link shown below). This is a different version of Microsoft Visio from what is available in MS Office 365.
If you have any problems accessing the lab, contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.

Lab Steps
STEP 1: Create a Block Diagram (15 points)
The block diagram should show the boundaries of the ED information system.
On the File menu, point to New, point to General, and then click Basic Diagram and then Choose Create.
From Basic Shapes, drag shapes onto the drawing page.
Resize and rotate shapes as necessary.
Resize
Click a shape to select it and do one of the following:
If the shape has selection handles, drag one until the shape is the size you want. To resize the shape proportionally, drag a corner handle.
If the shape has endpoints, drag an endpoint to the length you want.
Rotate
Select the shape, and then drag the rotation handle.

You will use these shapes to create a diagram for the ED system components.
STEP 2: Create Components and Relationships (15 points)
Add the components of the ED information system and their relationships.
To create components and relationships, drag appropriate shapes to your diagram to represent components and relationships. You can associate multiple shapes with the same component.
To add text to a shape, select the shape and then type.
STEP 3: Create Systems Inputs, Outputs, and Interfaces (20 points)
Use system inputs, outputs, and interfaces with systems outside the ED information system.
To create inputs, outputs and interfaces, drag appropriate shapes to your components and relationships.
