A group and a team differ fundamentally in their structure and function. A group is typically defined as a collection of individuals who may have shared interests or goals but operate independently. In contrast, a team is a collective of individuals who work interdependently toward a common goal, with shared responsibilities, mutual accountability, and complementary skills. Teams, especially in healthcare settings, require collaboration, coordination, and synergy among members to ensure the delivery of effective care (Leach & Goss, 2019). In essence, teams are more dynamic and interdependent, while groups may function more as a collection of individuals working in parallel rather than cohesively.
As a leader, evaluating teamwork is essential for ensuring that the team is functioning at its optimal level. Key variables to consider in this evaluation include communication, trust, role clarity, and conflict resolution. Effective communication ensures that team members are aligned in their objectives, while trust fosters a safe environment where members feel valued and respected. Role clarity helps avoid overlap and ambiguity, which can cause inefficiencies. Moreover, a team’s ability to manage conflict constructively is vital for sustaining collaboration and enhancing performance. Evaluating these variables regularly allows leaders to identify and address any dysfunctions early (Choi & Lee, 2022).
In my personal work environment as a school nurse, an example of optimal interprofessional teamwork is seen in the collaboration between the school nurse, teachers, counselors, and administrators to address students’ health and well-being. For instance, when a student has a chronic condition such as asthma or diabetes, the school nurse works closely with the teachers to ensure that the student’s health needs are met throughout the school day. Counselors may provide support for the student’s emotional well-being, while administrators help coordinate accommodations and resources. Collaborative decision-making in this context ensures that each student receives comprehensive care, and any challenges are addressed through collective problem-solving. However, potential causes of dysfunction in this team dynamic could include miscommunication, lack of clarity about roles, or inadequate resources. Nurse leaders in the school setting must be proactive in fostering open communication and resolving conflict to maintain an effective, supportive team environment for both staff and students (Leach & Goss, 2019)
