For this essay, you will watch a documentary that focuses around an argument. You are to analyze this argument, pointing out your observations about principles we have discussed in class.
Please identify one use of logos, one use of pathos, and one use of ethos used in an argument. Why do you classify it as ethos, pathos, or logos?
Please identify at least one instance where the bias of a group or individual can be seen. What type of bias is it? How can you tell? Is it a reasonable bias or a blinding one?
Identify at least one argument that is a fallacy. Which fallacy is being used? How can you tell?
Each argument will contain the components of the Socratic Method (here’sa link discussing the Socratic method (Links to an external site.)andanother link using Pulp Fiction (Links to an external site.)to illustrate the Socratic method)  and the Toulmin Method (Links to an external site.). Identify them. What is the speaker trying to achieve by using them? (Note that you may not see a fully fleshed out Socratic argument but you will see people using questions to make their points).
My recommended documentaries arethis one (Links to an external site.), which is about teaching Intelligent Design in schools.this one (Links to an external site.)about the Anti-Vax movement, or you can view the documentary “Behind the Curve” on Netflix (it’s about the Flat Earth movement) if you subscribe to that service. UPDATE: this film is no longer available on Netflix. You can watch it on YouTube, but it isn’t free.
Here are three more film suggestions from J Sarge’s friendly librarians
