My name is, I live in texas and have been a nurse for almost nine years. Currently, I work in Olympia in a critical care unit where I do many different roles such as charge, rapid, and sepsis nurse depending on the shift. Before that, I worked on a surgical acute unit for a little over a year and spent a brief time right after nursing school in a skilled nursing facility. I am now pursuing my degree as a PMHNP, which I have always had a desire to work towards.
Walden’s Vision, Mission, Goals, and Social Change
My goals as a scholar practitioner going into the mental health field is to help create more resources to a growing population and help this field service people on all spectrums of mental health disorders. Walden University’s vision to promote an inclusive environment for students to contribute to global and societal challenges (Walden University, Academics: Student handbook: Vision, mission, and goals. n.d) is what stood out to me when it came to choosing a place to pursue advancing my career. This vision aligns with my passion to see everyone have access to mental health services and prepare my own knowledge to be able to deliver that. The College of Nursing goals state that they strive to “provide educational approaches that address complex needs of adult learners and support academic quality and integrity” (Walden University, Academics: College of nursing: College of nursing. n.d). I hope to take this style of education and be able to apply it to helping support people from diverse educational backgrounds. I am someone that strives to create a positive social change I feel very proud an honored to be a part of an institution whose mission aligns with mine.
Walden MSN Program Outcomes and Perspectives
The outcomes and perspectives for the MSN program are also in line with my professional goals. The programs’ emphasis on evidence-based practice and evaluating needs of diverse populations to promote health and prevent illness aligns with my desire to provide high-quality, patient-centered care (Walden University, Academics: College of nursing: Master of science in nursing (MSN) n.d). Through this program, my goal is to develop the skills that will allow me to communicate effectively, assess, diagnose, and promote high quality patient care. My hope is that the programs’ focus on leadership and high-quality healthcare delivery will equip me with the ability to create positive change in mental healthcare.
Importance of Networking and Goal Achievement
Networking has always played a critical role both academically and professionally my nursing career. As someone that started in a skilled nursing facility to a surgical unit and finally into critical care, I have utilized many networks of people to help me along the way. Not only with getting into those positions, but also to advance my skills by getting guidance and mentorship from senior nurses and eventually into leadership roles as a charge nurse. Networking is also what led me to Walden, when a former co-worker went through the same program I am pursuing now. Creating these relationships with people who work in roles or fields that I am interested in, provide fundamental knowledge in taking the steps to pursue that role or field of work (Schmidt, n.d). Social media has quickly become an easy and accessible way to network. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn all offer platforms to connect with nurses and mentors all over the world (Nurse.org, n.d). Using these platforms to form relationships with major influencers in this field will open doors to academics, jobs and knowledge that can benefit all of us in many areas of our careers.

student B
My name is  B, a native of  country currently working as a travel nurse in the United States. The nature of my service has taken me extensively across various healthcare facilities and institutions. My primary residence is in Texas. While I enjoy the diverse experiences travel nursing offers, I am seeking a more settled work-life moving forward. Currently, I am a registered nurse at Cedar Crest, a psychiatric hospital. I am also working at St. David Hospital, where I provide my services on the med-surge floor. I hope to transition soon to a family nurse practitioner role. This program at Walden University aligns perfectly with my goal to provide optimal, holistic care on a more predictable schedule, ensuring I can make a greater impact on the lives of those I am of assistance to.
Alignment with Walden University’s Vision, Mission, and Social Change Initiatives
Walden University’s mission to empower career professionals to become scholar-practitioners dedicated to positive social change (Walden University, n.d.-a) is very similar to my vision of advocating for equitable, person-centered care, as the impact that that can have on individuals, communities, and the healthcare system as a whole cannot be overstated (Banerjee, 2020). The emphasis on inclusivity and advancing global good aligns with my belief in eliminating barriers to healthcare access like poverty (Bidmead et al., 2024) and discrimination (Allen et al., 2017). Similarly, the College of Nursing’s dedication to improving health outcomes and health equity (Walden University n.d.-b) reflects my commitment to holistic (Adams et al., 2024), person-centered care (Kuipers et al., 2019)—both of which have proved to be immensely important to achieving optimal patient outcomes—and advocacy for fairness in healthcare administration.
Connection to the MSN Program Outcomes
The MSN program learning outcomes also show the great similarities between Walden University and my professional aspirations. The focus on evidence-based practice, leadership, and advocacy prepares me to contribute to transformative change in healthcare. Through this program, I aim to develop advanced competencies in assessment, planning, and implementation of cost-effective strategies to reduce health disparities. Additionally, the emphasis on professional development, ethical practice, and global impact aligns with my mission to advocate for fairness and ensure that care is delivered with dignity and respect for all individuals.
The Role of Networking in Achieving Goals
Networking plays a crucial role in achieving both professional and academic goals. I expect that this time that will be spent working closely with the school’s administration, advisors, instructors, and colleagues will be greatly illuminating, as knowledge exchange and mutual support invariably enable personal and professional growth. I look forward to engaging with the diverse Walden community as well as building relationships with mentors and leaders in the nursing field. These connections will be invaluable as I work to become a scholar-practitioner capable of advancing equitable, person-centered care.
Conclusion
I am excited to start on this journey with all of you and to make use of the many resources available on here, the values that I am sure will be shared, and the opportunities I would be presented with to grow as a nursing professional and advocate for positive social change in the world.
