Each student is required to complete the term project, which is a 15-20 page (not counting the cover, abstract and reference page) research paper in proper APA format. In preparation for the paper, students will submit a thesis statement, an annotated bibliography, and a rough draft. The culmination of this course is the creation of a 15-20 page empirical literature review centered around a central issue in Criminal Justice. Consequently, you will be tasked with crafting a topic/problem statement, subject to approval before advancing to subsequent phases, which include developing an annotated bibliography, drafting the literature review, and finalizing the literature review. It is essential to note that recycling previous work from other courses is not permitted; the final product for this course should be original and tailored specifically for this context.
Selecting a research-based topic and formulating a thesis statement that addresses a problem within the criminal justice system (e.g., law enforcement, courts, corrections) while proposing a viable solution. This should be a subject that not only captures your interest but also provides a wealth of research articles, enabling you to cite substantial support.
Hence, the initial step involves identifying a suitably narrowed and specific topic and conducting database searches to ensure the availability of recent (within the past five (5) years) peer-reviewed articles and relevant research about your chosen topic.
Use This Format:
Your thesis statement for each proposed topic should identify a problem and a proposed solution. –> (in one clear sentence)
o    Proposed Topic #1: Terrorism
* ID Problem – combating terrorism is complex because not all law enforcement agencies share information
* ID Solution – synergized focus between many agencies in a threefold approach of awareness, surveillance, and prevention
NOW COMBINE THESE INTO ONE CLEAR SENTENCE
Example Thesis Statement:
Combating terrorism will require a synergized focus between agencies in a threefold approach of awareness, surveillance, and prevention. < -- (in one clear sentence) o    Proposed Topic #2: Organized Crime * ID Problem - organized criminals have access to illegal funds that support their crime efforts    * ID Solution - shutting down financial avenues through broader banking oversight, legislation reform, and an increased use of informants  NOW COMBINE THESE INTO ONE CLEAR SENTENCE Example Thesis Statement:       Reducing organized crime accessibility to illegal funds will take shutting down financial avenues through broader banking oversight, legislation reform, and an increased use of informants.< -- (in one clear sentence) o    Proposed Topic #3:  Human Trafficking * ID Problem - combating human trafficking is difficult because not all agencies share the right information * ID Solution - multi-agency approach targeting organized crime within and outside the United States using surveillance, harsher punishments, and increased public awareness NOW COMBINE THESE INTO ONE CLEAR SENTENCE Example Thesis Statement:       Combating human trafficking will require a multi-agency approach targeting organized crime within and outside the United States using surveillance, harsher punishments, and increased public awareness. < -- (in one clear sentence) I recommend selecting a subject manageable within the scope of available resources. Conduct a preliminary review of pertinent databases in the university's online library and steer clear of overly technical, specialized, or excessively narrow topics that could impede access to suitable source materials. Please remember: Your paper will need content supported by peer-reviewed scholarly articles and studies that you find in the University's Online Library databases. Databases such as Pro-Quest, SAGE, and Ebsco Host. Pro Quest and SAGE are my favorites. Also, the peer-reviewed scholarly articles researched and cited in your paper must have been published within the past five (5) years. You will need approximately (15-20) "peer-reviewed" articles to support your thesis.
