Students will REVIEW and analyze the Hero’s Journey. How does Beowulf follow the hero’s journey?

Key points of Beowulf’s Hero’s Journey:
• Ordinary World:
Beowulf is established as a young, strong warrior in his homeland of Geatland.
• Call to Adventure:
He receives a message about the monstrous Grendel terrorizing King Hrothgar’s hall in Denmark, prompting him to embark on a journey to fight the beast.
• Refusal of the Call:
While not explicitly stated, Beowulf’s confidence and desire to prove himself can be seen as a form of accepting the call despite potential dangers.
• Meeting the Mentor:
While not a single mentor figure, Beowulf is likely inspired by the tales of past heroes and the stories of the Geatish people.
• Threshold Crossing:
Beowulf arrives in Denmark and enters Heorot, the hall where Grendel is wreaking havoc, marking his entry into the unknown.
• Challenges and Trials:
Beowulf faces the brutal battle with Grendel, followed by a dangerous descent into Grendel’s mother’s lair to confront her.
• Approaching the Inmost Cave:
The underwater cavern where Grendel’s mother lives represents the deepest point of Beowulf’s challenge.
• Ordeal and Revelation:
Beowulf defeats Grendel’s mother using a giant sword found in her lair, demonstrating his exceptional strength and courage.
• The Road Back:
Beowulf returns to Geatland as a celebrated hero, receiving praise and gifts from King Hrothgar.
• Atonement (resurrection or renewal):
Later in life, Beowulf takes on one final challenge against a dragon, ultimately dying from a fatal wound but securing victory for his people.
• Return to home (Transformation – the hero is transformed in some way):
Beowulf’s journey transforms him from a young warrior into a legendary hero, remembered for his bravery and self-sacrifice.
