Instructions
After a semester’s worth of exploring the subject, history, and practice of art, you will now write an informative essay detailing what you understand about art and how your understanding has transformed over the semester. The following questions should guide you when writing your final paper. How you address the questions is up to you, but be sure to touch on each of the prompts thoughtfully for full credit.
In order to address the following questions, refer to specific examples we have explored in class or through your own research. Consult your answers to the module worksheets for themes to discuss, artists to reference, and terminology to use. Construct an essay that if you read it out loud, would be coherent (make sense), use paragraphs to follow a logical order, and convey your deepest consideration of the topic in your own voice. 1000 words minimum.

Questions to address:
Intro paragraph:
In your own words, what is art?
What qualities or types of art, styles, or modes of expression do you value? What types of art are not as important to you?
Briefly introduce how your concept of art has expanded, changed, or stayed the same over the course of the semester (see below)
Body paragraphs:
Look back on some of the artists and concepts we’ve explored. What different motivations drove them to make art? How were their contributions valued by their culture around them? What other reasons might drive a person toward creative expression?
Find and discuss examples of people whose art expands the definition of what is traditionally considered art, or someone who creates “art” but might not think about it that way. How does creativity, craft, and/or beauty play into how art is defined or appreciated?
What is the importance of art in general, and more specifically visual art? What is art for? How does society use art or artists? What important roles to artists play for society? Consider describing several elements of contemporary society that would not be the same without the presence of art.
Cite at least 3 examples of art we explored through class that you did not understand at first but later came to “appreciate”. How did your understanding change, and why did your viewpoint change? What new knowledge and different ways of looking at or thinking about art helped you to develop an appreciation for something you might not have understood at first?
Conclusion:
What is the role of art in society today or in the future?

Your final paper should include proper MLA citations with in-text references and a bibliography for any sources you cite.

Include any illustrations at the end of the paper, and include artist name, title, and year associated with the artwork.
