Do not use outside sources; no outside
sources are needed or allowed. Write a poetry analysis essay explaining how the poet uses the three kinds of literary
elements to make meaning and express the theme. Each body paragraph should explain a
different type of element. If there is more than one example of an element (more than one
metaphor, for example), discuss at least two separate quotes (like two separate metaphors) in
the paragraph about that element. Explain the similes or metaphors or other elements shown
in your quotes, and then discuss how the quote shows the theme and adds meaning.
Choose the three strongest types of elements that contribute most to the meaning.
Each body paragraph will discuss one of these three types of elements
The essay should begin with an introductory paragraph that names the author and title (poem
title in quotation marks) in the first sentence or two. Briefly introduce the subject of the poem
and give a little background. You can mention possible themes. Lead up to your thesis
statement, which should be the last sentence in the introduction. The thesis should name the
three elements and give an idea about what theme these elements help develop.
o Body paragraphs should each begin with a topic sentence that names the element and gives
an idea of what meaning it adds to the poem. Your topic sentence of course should be a
complete sentence, not a heading.
o Each body paragraph should have a minimum of two significant, relevant direct quotes from
the poem (each with citation—line number or numbers). Choose the strongest quotes that
best show the element you’re writing about. Quotes should be followed by your commentary
explaining the element shown in the quote. If you’re writing about a metaphor, your
commentary should explain the metaphor in the quote. What are the parts of the metaphor,
and what do they mean? Is the metaphor effective? What meaning does it add to the poem?
Finish each body paragraph with a brief mention of the larger ideas (themes) related to the
quotes you used.
o The essay should end with a concluding paragraph that appropriately ends the essay and does
not contain any new quotes or examples (those belong in body paragraphs as support for
topic sentences). This paragraph should end with a final thought about the significance of the
literary elements and themes or insights about human nature or the human experience
reflected in the poem.
Do not use outside sources; no outside
sources are needed or allowed.
essay should be 2 ½ to 4 pages, plus the Works Cited page. Follow MLA format guidelines, especially the following: one-inch margins; Tab to indent at
the start of each paragraph; everything double-spaced with no extra space added before or
after any part of the essay; 12-point Times New Roman font for all parts of the essay;
heading at the top left margin; centered title that indicates what the paper is about but that
isn’t just the title of the poem; parenthetical citations for quotes; a Works Cited page with an
entry for the poem formatted as a hanging indent
As mentioned, plan to incorporate at least two strong, relevant quotations from the poem in
each body paragraph. You can use more than two or three if you wish. Be sure the quotations
are significant, are introduced and cited properly, and are followed by your commentary
explaining the element shown in the quote. “Significant” does not refer to the length of the
quotation, but rather to its importance and its effectiveness in showing the element. Sometimes a
quote might only be a word or a few words. Do not use long block quotes.
Set up each quote by giving some context. Use at least a signal phrase to introduce each quote
(the speaker says, Shakespeare writes, Frost states, etc.). Be sure to work quotes into
grammatically correct sentences (don’t create sentence fragments, runon/fused sentences, or
comma splices). If the sentence would have a grammatical problem if there were no quotation
marks, it still has the same problem with the quotation marks. As mentioned, you must add your own commentary after each quote. Don’t put commentary in
the same sentence with a quote. After the citation, put a period and start a new sentence to begin
your commentary. Use the commentary to explain the element shown in the quote and tie it to
the poem’s meaning
Although you may have more than three body paragraphs if you wish, each body paragraph
should have one element (with at least two examples) that is not the same as the element in any
other paragraph. Do not take more than one paragraph to talk about an element.
Do not use ANY outside sources
The only quotes should come from the poem, and all ideas should be your own
