The textbook explains that following the end of World War Two, Korea was split between the North and South at the Potsdam Conference. North Korea was under communist control, and South Korea was backed by the American government. It goes on to describe how “On June 25, 1950, with Stalin’s ostensible blessing but no promise of support, North Korean leader Kim II-sung sent 80,000 troops, backed by artillery, tanks, and aircraft, across the 38th Parallel into South Korea.”(Dailey 2018, 208”. This was shocking to Truman, who viewed the North Koreans as “Stalin’s puppets, testing America’s commitment to contain Communism everywhere” (Dailey 2018, 208). In response, Truman mobilized troops to Korea to support the UN. This is significant because the President was effectively able to wage war against the communists without the approval of congress, since he did not start the war. This marked an expansion of the power and influence of the President.
