Suppose you are studying the everyday mental functioning of 200 Canadians, who were each administered the 14-item Mental Health Continuum, Short-Form (MHC-SF; Keyes, 2002; the wording of the 14 test items can be found at the bottom of this page and in the SPSS file — ensure you read them) which included three subscales: emotional well-being (items 1-3), social well-being (items 4-8), and psychological well-being (items 9-14). All items are scored on a 6-point Likert scale, asking how often in the past month they experienced various feelings. Pay careful attention to the numbers and labels used: 1＝′every day′, 2＝′almost every day′, 3＝′two or three times a week′, 4＝′once a week′, 5＝′once or twice in a month′, 6＝′never′). A recent article (Lamborn, Cramer, & Riberdy, 2018) is included for reference (please review fig.5 on page-9).

Although 10 datasets are attached below, you will analyze the one that corresponds to the LAST DIGIT in your 9-digit student number (e.g., a student with the number ˂ 987-654-321 ˃ would analyze dataset Keyes_1, see below).

Your dataset also includes the following demographic variables: age (in years), sex (1＝male, 2＝female), total household income (1＝$0-$20k, 2＝$20-$40k, 3＝$40-$60k, 4＝$60-$80k, 5＝$80k+), highest level of education (1＝less than secondary, 2＝secondary graduate, 3＝some post secondary, 4＝post secondary graduate), and marital status (1＝married, 2＝co-habiting, 3＝widowed, separated, divorced, 4＝single or never married). These value labels will need to be incorporated into your dataset.

As demonstrated in the lecture podcasts, conduct a psychometric evaluation (including both Cronbach + split-half reliability estimates) of the full 14-item MHC-SF scale (show overall scale mean and standard deviation), and recommend dropping/modifying any items and why (however, don′t leave any out in your sub/scale derivations).

Consider as well the following:
a) determine whether general well-being varies by gender, education, income, and marital status (including group sizes, means, standard deviations); note: if the possible scores for general well-being can range from 14 to 84, what can you conclude about your sample′s average level of general well-being?
b) derive alpha coefficients (plus means and standard deviations) for the three subscales and determine the extent to which they are interrelated,
c) report subscale means and standard deviations by sex and determine if there are sex differences;
d) to what extent do the three subscales correlate with age;
e) using factor analysis (SETTINGS: principal axis factoring + direct oblimin [correlated] rotation, fixed number of factors ＝ 3), did you roughly reproduce the three-factor model? Were the factors correlated?
NOTE: To better interpret your pattern matrix, implement these two OPTIONS: ˂ Suppress Small Coefficients ˃ to an ˂ Absolute Value Below ˃ .3
NOTE: In addition to your saved syntax file, you will need to attach your annotated (marked-up) SPSS output and clearly indicate where you are deriving your psychometric conclusions and recommendations.
