Respond to at least two colleagues who chose a different scenario in one of the following ways:
Compare the social-worker client interaction in your scenario to your colleague’s scenario. What is one thing the social worker did well in your scenario that could be applied to your colleague’s scenario?
Propose next steps for the social worker in addressing the identified ethical issue.
my scenario:
I picked Manuel Sanchez’s importance of screening cases specifically relates to the primary substance-related concern, alcohol use disorder (AUD). The problem of dependency or substance abuse of alcohol is not pointed out clearly in the transcript, but Manuel’s behaviors showed a possibility that it is causing more personal and family problems. It could also be a result of failure or self-worth arising from cases of substance use, as proved by (Rohsenow et al., 2015). Manuel, a 50-year-old man with a lifetime history of alcohol dependence, reveals common features of chronic and cyclic relapsing disorder, which define his relationships and quality of life.
Several therapeutic processes between the social worker and Manuel are presented in the given interaction. Manuel stated some favorite relatives’ names and the social worker appeared caring, trying to start a conversation with him. However, the social worker may also feel uneasy, or in any case, distant, especially if they do not have enough practice or sufficient training to work with culturally diverse patients or with substance dependence sufferers. These attitudes could prevent the therapist from responding and connecting at a deep, meaningful level and serve to leave the client feeling unsupported and ununderstood ever after (Larner, 2014).
Cognitive biases in relation to the scenario may include stereotypes or prejudices where Dina and Dan may harbor negative beliefs or prejudices about Manuel being of Hispanic origin and as the breadwinner of his family. The social worker may thus bring into the picture stereotypical thinking about Latino families and alcohol, and this will color the perceptions about Manuel’s problems and his capacity to solve them. These biases can hinder the fabrication of the therapeutic relationship, which so vital in the treatment process (Sue & Constants, 2019). Cultural sensitivity and neutrality are recommendations that would improve a working-client relationship and would correspondingly ease engagement and involvement for Manuel.
1-jasmine- The case I selected focuses on Angela Peters. This young mother is navigating a challenging substance-related issue involving cocaine, which has progressed from occasional use, supplied by her sister-in-law, to actively seeking the drug independently. Her dependency on cocaine has contributed to neglectful behavior, including leaving her 18-month-old daughter, Megan, home alone while obtaining the drug. This situation was further exacerbated when Angela’s abusive husband, Michael, physically assaulted her while she was high and holding Megan, leading to police intervention. At the hospital, both Angela and Megan underwent drug testing, and Child Protective Services (CPS) was involved. The social worker assigned to the case created a safety plan for Megan, reassured Angela that substance abuse does not automatically result in losing custody, and offered referrals to treatment programs with childcare and a domestic violence agency. Despite these efforts, Angela left feeling overwhelmed and hopeless, possibly due to the social worker’s perceived bias in tone and demeanor when discussing Angela’s admission of leaving Megan alone. This case underscores the ethical responsibility of the social worker to remain objective, avoid personal biases, and prioritize both Megan’s safety and Angela’s trust (NASW, 2021). Building a strong rapport with Angela is essential to provide meaningful education, address the risks of her actions, and support her path to recovery.
2-Rachelle-
I decided to look at Angela’s case study. The substance related issue that Angela is facing is that she is leaving her child alone in order to go and get cocaine that she needs (Walden University, 2023). It was also stated in the case study that Angela feels that she cannot navigate life without cocaine right now. Angela is isolated and also dealing with a domestic violence relationship according to the case study by Walden University (2023). Angela would be struggling with a stimulant addiction ( Van Wormer and Davis, 2018).
At first Angela did not want to open up, though when she did it felt that she was met with judgment and some bias from the social worker. According to Russolillo et al (2023) stigma towards people with  substance use disorder can be a barrier to treatment. When I first watched it I was taken back by the interaction and did not feel that it was professional of the social worker. According to the NASW code of ethics social workers have a commitment to clients to promote well being, which I did not feel this social worker was doing. There were specific biases towards Angela from the clinician when Angela stated that she would leave her child to go get more cocaine. The social workers facial expressions and tone of voice changed when she clarified what angela stated.
An ethical dilemma that is occurring is that the social worker needs to not put her own feelings into it, though also make sure that Angelas child Megan is safe. Its also important for the social worker and client relationship that the social worker gains rapport with Angela which might not happen if she continues to put her own feelings and bias into the sessions with angela. It is important that the social worker provides education to Angela and make sure she understands the situation that she is putting Megan in.
