Service-Learning Reflection Paper
Working with young people in EAOP is a key element of this course because, at least in a small capacity, it provides practical experience to many issues that we have discussed around school inequality. Few courses mesh theory and data, with hands-on experiences and practical work. Thus, this paper is intended to reflect this praxis (for those who were able to experience it). This reflection paper is your chance to critically reflect on your experiences, in the context of this class. It is also a chance to think about the future: how has what you learned in class and through EAOP affect how you view potential solutions (i.e., interventions)? As burgeoning educators or educational scholars, we rely on personal experiences to inform what we learn, and this is your chance to think holistically about what we have learned in this course in tandem with the work you were doing at EAOP. To help you brainstorm what this paper would discuss, think about these questions:

• What did you learn by working with these high school students?
• How did you feel working with these high school students? And why?
• Did anything surprise you during your interactions or moments deserve further analysis?
• How did these experience support or challenge your preconceptions about education—or about some topic or idea we discussed in class?

Feel free to take this paper in what direction brings the most meaning to you and makes the most sense.

Reflection Paper Guidelines and Rubric
While there is no set format to this paper, there are a few guidelines and suggestions:

• Please use your “fieldnotes” that you have taken to bolster your conclusions. Consider these fieldnotes as “evidence” of what you thought or felt or pondered at that moment.
o Include at least THREE specific anecdotes working with a student (but more anecdotes and specific examples are very welcome)
▪ NOTE: if you cannot recall anecdotes with students, then think of this requirement as referring to your fieldnotes at least three times
• Please refer to at least THREE works of scholarship in your reflection paper which can be drawn from class materials (although you can also use outside materials, too).
• At least one part of your paper should address your future action steps in education: do you have an idea for an intervention based on what you have written or experienced? What future goals do you have in whatever your next steps are (i.e., graduate school, job, in your community, etc.) and how does what you learned in this class and through EAOP/this course contribute to those goals?
• Be sure to cite appropriately using APA or Chicago Manual of Style (i.e., footnotes).
• Paper should be between 1,250 and 1,500 words (which is approx. 4-5 pages), be double spaced, and have clear organization/structure
• Even though it’s a “reflection” paper, it should still have main points that will be addressed (i.e., your “takeaways”)
o A good goal is to aim for at least 2-3 “takeaways” that you felt are beneficial to your development as a scholar, educator, or public intellectual
o In relation, your paper should still be organized and have a clear structure in which all your paragraphs connect accordingly (i.e., your paragraphs should flow and connect appropriately)

This paper will be graded based on four elements:
Overall thoughtfulness and fieldnote reflection (15 points): how thoughtfully and candidly did you reflect on these experiences?
EX: did you sit and think deeply about all what it all meant in terms of your understanding of school inequality by social class and other factors, or was this reflection more topical in nature?)

Relationship to scholarship/class content (15 points): did you connect your experiences and/or reflections to what you’ve learned/explored this quarter?
EX: did you connect what you experienced to what we have discussed in class and other ideas in meaningful ways based on the readings, or were there only more surface-level connections?

Writing clarity and organization (5 points): is your paper carefully structured in a way that makes sense, bolsters the key points of the paper, and has clearly defined goals?

Requirements (5 points): did your paper meet all the requirements as identified in the prompt?

For the resource I will provide some of the class reading, and my field notes for the EAOP. Please at least use two from them. And the other one could use outside resources or the class reading.
What is EAOP?
The Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) was established in 1976 by the University of California (UC) in keeping with a recommendation by the California Legislature to expand opportunities for all California students. In particular, the EAOP mission is to empower students from historically first-generation college-going, socioeconomically disadvantage and English-language learning communities to become competitive applicants for colleges and universities.
As the UC largest academic preparation program, the EAOP is committed to making preparation for success in college not just an option; but also a reality by helping students achieve their educational goals regardless of institution. It’s provides opportunities for students to become competitive college applicants by improving academic skills and master advanced high school curriculum.
