Task 4: Problem Solving – Assignment Assignment Rubric Assignment Rubric – Alternative Formats This task requires you to complete an assignment, which will focus on creating 2 math problems. The focus will be grades 1 to 8. You will create two original math problems; one at the primary level and one at the junior level. To get in the mindset of problem solving, begin by watching a video of students discussing their problem solving strategies to solve a math problem they have been given:
Number Routine: Multiple Strategies (video)
Next …Outlined in the 2005 math curriculum document were ” … the mathematical processes students need to learn and apply as they work to achieve the expectations outlined within the five strands. The need to highlight these process expectations arose from the recognition that students should be actively engaged in applying these processes throughout the program, rather than in connection with particular strands. The mathematical processes that support effective learning in mathematics are as follows:
problem solving
reasoning and proving
reflecting
selecting tools and computational strategies
connecting
representing
communicating
The mathematical processes can be seen as the processes through which students acquire and apply mathematical knowledge and skills. These processes are interconnected. Problem solving and communicating have strong links to all the other processes. A problem-solving approach encourages students to reason their way to a solution or a new understanding.”
Read the Grades 1 to 8 math curriculum document, paying attention to how it has changed how it approaches mathematical processes and problem-solving from the 2005 curriculum.
Specifically, you will want to refer to the Problem Solving model which is now referred to as “Mathematical Modelling” when you begin developing your own math problems for this task to ensure you take students through the steps in the problem solving model
Now that you have watched the video and done a bit of reading, you may also choose to explore the three resources below.

Getting Started on your AssignmentYou will create two original math problems; one at the primary level and one at the junior level. The focus will be grades 1 to 8.Your problems should provide students with a 3-part learning opportunities to problem solve. For each of your problems, you are expected to provide:
a copy of the problem
the grade level for the problem
the ‘theme’ (e.g., Spatial Reasoning, Fractions, Proportional Reasoning, Algebraic Reasoning )
curriculum strand(s) and expectation(s) addressed/covered
a learning goal and success criteria that meet each of the 4 parts of the achievement chart
mathematical structure used (e.g., parallel task, three-part math lesson, open-ended problem, etc.)
rationale for how the problems meet the needs and engage all levels of student learning and abilities
explanation of how the problems are inquiry based and promote student collaboration and higher order thinking skills
inclusion of any materials/manipulatives that students will have/need access to
