As we learned in Unit 2 of this course, our membership in social groups is important for our identities and has important consequences for our lived experiences. As our lives are shaped by socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and culture, so too are our interests.
That is, we become interested in different social issues as a result of our group memberships, identities, and related experiences. For this Discussion Board, think about the 5 chapters that you’ve met in this unit. Decide which chapter you found the most interesting ( health and Illness) and which chapter you found the least interesting ( political sociology):
STEP 1: Reflect upon the reasons that you were most interested in one topic and least interested in another topic. Write about how your identity or membership in a particular group may have influenced your interests in this way. Are these issues important to members of your community (however you define community)? Is an issue too far removed from your daily experiences? Do the issues have consequences for you and/or members of your community?
