)Interview your oldest living relative, neighbor, family friend, etc. This individual should be a “credible” source and should have spent the majority of their growing up years in America.
2.) Begin your report with an introduction of your interviewee.
3.) Ask the following questions and feel free to add some of your own. Make your interview conversational.
When you were my age, what were the major political issues happening in our country? Did these issues cause concern for young people at the time?
Were there any major wars going on? Was there a fear of being drafted or a fear of America being attacked?
What was the economy like? Describe your family’s spending habits.
Who was president at the time, and what was his“image” or reputation? How did the American public regard the president?
How did the average American view the constitution and/or constitutional rights?
What were some expectations that families and societies placed on teenagers during that time?
How did teenagers communicate with each other?
What do you think of current issues and America’s place in the world today?
If you could give all young Americans one piece of advice, what would it be?
What is your opinion of today’s young people?
Ask this question last……In your opinion, did people my age “have it better” during the time you were a teenager or now? Why?
4.) Finish your report with a 3-5 paragraph summation/reflection.
a. What did you learn about this individual that you didn’t already know?
b. Was this person’s experience “typical” for that time? You will need to do some research for this one and include
citations at the end.
c. How does the information you learned compare to your experience as a young American now?
*The instructors did not state how many pages to have but makes it more than 1-2 pages long.
