Ethical Differences in Business
To begin with, in his article, Martin Zwilling (2013), the Founder and CEO of Startup Professionals, offers five rules vital for transforming ones business into a more ethical unit. Overall, these recommendations appear to be quite vague and common for other situations requiring changes or conflict resolution. Zwilling (2013) discusses the importance of identification of the ground rules for all the parties, reasoning backward, facing the relevant facts, standing in the shoes of the parties affected. Finally, he emphasizes the usage of the global benefits approach to rate possible outcomes (Zwilling, 2013).
What seems to be the most interesting and, probably, applicable is the fourth recommendation of putting oneself into the place of the other (Zwilling, 2013). Empathy is the key to mediating any conflict: this idea is promoted by a famous peacebuilding scholar Johan Galtung (Spies, 2019). The corporate wars, for that matter, appear to be the same. Hence, understanding the perspective, and intentions of the parties judged is quite evidentially crucial. Noteworthy, ethical issues typically include the ones whose rights and representation usually are insufficient. Therefore, it becomes essential to look at a situation from another point of view for a fair judgment.
For instance, in the case presented in the American TV series The morning show, significant attention is driven towards the CEO (Leder, 2019). The latter did nothing when informed of the ethically unobvious events within the company (Leder, 2019). What could have been done was interview both parties and possibly start an investigation? In this case, interviewing would be the step towards efficient mediation that Zwilling (2013) analyzes. If such a policy would have been applied, the manager could observe the actual state of affairs in the company, namely, understanding how emotionally challenging this event must have been for the victim.
