The Difference Between New Orleans and Chicago Style Jazz and Swing Style Jazz
Both New Orleans and Chicago styles greatly contributed to the development of jazz music in the 19th and 20th centuries. The common thing that unifies New Orleans and Chicago Style is the significant impact of individual solos, less relaxed music, and 19th-century Black ethnic music motives (Encyclopædia Britannica, n.d.). Discover Jazz (2021) claims that there are differences between the characteristic of traditional New Orleans and Chicago styles. New Orleans style had a strong history starting its path before 1923 (Encyclopædia Britannica, n.d.). New Orleans jazz musicians implemented mobile instruments such as banjo, bass instruments, and marching percussion with a strong emphasis on four beats (Discover Jazz, 2021). Moreover, the use of solo performance was limited, focusing on the ensemble approach. Well-known marches mainly highlight the representation of New Orleans style.
On the other hand, the traditional Chicago style consisted of a small number of players, 5-8 musicians. In this style, instruments were not compact, so they included piano, drum set, and acoustic basses. Discover Jazz (2021) states that accent placed on 1st and 3rd beats highlighting the term two-beat. In this style, individual solos were a priority, while ensemble players went to second placetraditional Chicago style distributed in all forms of music, including tin pan valley. The difference between these two styles from the swing style is not considerable. Taking into account the history of the swing style, it can be seen that it derived from the early jazz styles. The difference between New Orleans and Chicago jazz styles and swing styles is mainly cultural (Swing and jazz, 2017). The musical or traditional transformation of jazz leads to the formation of a new style or sub-genre of jazz, known as swing. Both types use similar instruments and accent-making techniques.
