Using the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model in Designing a Community-Based Health Program

Introduction

The PRECEDE-PROCEED planning model (PPM) is widely applied by public health professionals as a framework to improve health and solve community issues. The model describes factors influencing health outcomes and provides a comprehensive strategy for health needs assessment, and implementation of health promotion programs. It can be used to supply a structure and support program planners in developing a new community-based health program. The purpose of this essay is to consider PPM and its application in planning community-based health programs.

PRECEDE-PROCEED Model

There are two parts of the PPM framework: PRECEDE and PROCEED. According to Lin, Wang, Luo, and Qin (2019), PPM is a comprehensive model that can provide program planners with a comprehensive strategy to plan, implement, and evaluate a community-based health program. The PRECEDE part stands for predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling constructs in educational/environmental diagnosis and evaluation (Azar et al., 2017, p. 5026).

The part aims at assessing various factors to see what can be done to address the problem and design medical intervention. PROCEED stands for policy, regulatory, and organizational constructs in educational and environmental development (Azar et al., 2017, p. 5026). This part includes implementation, which focuses on design intervention, assessing the availability of resources, and implementing a health program.

To create a successful and sustainable community-based health program, healthcare professionals need to examine various community factors, such as social needs and desired outcome results of a specified population and health detriments of the identified issue. Also, it is necessary to identify behavioral or environmental factors that determine the target communitys lifestyle and adversely affect its health. For example, social and behavioral factors can be identified through community forums and interviews, and epidemiological factors through statistical data. According to Didehvar, Zareban, Jalili, Bakhshani, Shahrakipoor, and Balouchi (2016), healthcare workers need to consider administrative and policy factors that may affect the implementation of the health program. For instance, this information can be gathered from research articles on politics in healthcare.

Conclusion

It is necessary for the successful implementation of a health program to emphasize community needs. The application of the PPM model allows the problems of a target community to be addressed. Furthermore, it makes it possible to identify numerous factors that have a direct impact on the health of the population. The framework can be successfully used for the implementation of health programs by medical professionals to develop the quality of care.
