In Lessons 10, 11 and 12, we examined how news reports use media frames to construct representations of criminal events, and we discussed:
• dominant frames
• counter frames
• missing frames
• problem frames
• sensational frames
• stereotypical frames
We then learned how also using the scholarly literature will help you “contextualize your data and uncover the wider implications of your findings” (van den Hoonard, 2019, 184) by providing you with additional analytic insights about how a topic has been framed in the news.
For this assignment, you will do ethnographic content analysis (ECA) by completing a protocol for each of four Media Examples, (i.e., you will end up with a total of four protocols) following the example provided in class (see Appendix A for the protocol template).
The first two Media Examples relate to media representations of the Reena Virk murder.
The second two Media Examples relate to media representations of the people experiencing homelessness.
In your ECA, be sure to consider not only the written text, but also any photos and videos that are embedded in the news reports.
MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS OF THE REENA VIRK MURDER
As you analyze each Media Example the Reena Virk murder, draw on what we learned in Lessons 10, 11 and 12 about “media frames” AND use the analytic insights offered by the Scholarly Article which has been provided as a pdf. Please note that you may find that the two media examples are characterized by the same type of frame, and the same analytic insights. If this is the case, you can note that similarity, and provide different evidence/excerpt(s) for each Media Example.
Provide a minimum of four of the following for the Reena Virk topic (it doesn’t matter how the following are distributed between the two Media Examples).
Frame:
Evidence/Excerpts:
Analytic Insights:
Stated another way, for this topic you must provide at least one set of Frame, Evidence/Excerpts, and Analytic Insights for one of the Media Examples. The remaining Frame, Evidence/Excerpts and Analytic Insights that are required can be provided for the other media example.
To conclude this part of the assignment, consider the four “sets” (Frame, Evidence/Excerpts, and Analytic Insights) that you have completed, and produce a one-paragraph Analysis using the Analysis example provided in Lesson Twelve, 12.8. (For an illustration of how the ECA is to be set-up, please see APPENDIX D and refer also to the examples provided in Lesson 12.6.)

MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS OF PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS
As you analyze each Media Example of the homeless, draw on what we learned in Lessons 10, 11 and 12 about “media frames” AND use the analytic insights offered by the Scholarly Article which has been provided as a pdf. Please note that you may find that the two media examples are characterized by the same type of frame, and the same analytic insights. If this is the case, you can note that similarity, and provide different evidence/excerpt(s) for each Media Example.
Provide a minimum of four of the following for homeless topic (it doesn’t matter how the following are distributed between the two Media Examples).
