Essay on ‘Tell Tale Heart’ Figurative Language

My team and I analyzed two amazing stories (The Tell-tale Heart and The Fall of House of Usher) we discussed some points and agreed on some and disagreed on other things. I will be taking you through what we discovered and what we have come up with. We first took a look at the telltale heart and we discovered that the author uses imagery profoundly throughout the story for example one of the important parts of imagery used throughout the story is the old man’s eye.

The man believes that his eye is a vulture eye which could symbolize that it’s an all-seeing eye that always is watching the man. We also looked at symbolism and how the author uses symbolism to get a point across like when shows us the beating of the heart and how that can be like a representation of our consciousness and how it’s always telling us what we did wrong. The eye also may symbolize a reason or a motive we have to do something bad or something thats not good for us. The floorboards also symbolize our ways of hiding our doing of something bad.

This story also includes some metaphors like the eye was a metaphor for evil, at midnight the man was able to carry out his true intentions, and there was a bell to signify the end of the old man’s life. The author also leaves us some truths or lessons like that a guilty conscience is not going to leave you alone till you get it off your chest, or if you do something wrong it’s always going to come back and haunt you. We also analyzed the character, the old man was pale with a blue eye, I feel like the old man was rich, and the author didn’t give us much on him for us to focus more on his eye. On the other hand, theres the narrator is a very unusual person, he claims that he loves the old man but ends up killing him. I also believe that he is the keeper of the old man, taking care of the old man.

The narrator also spends a lot of time defending himself and explaining why he chose it. In a way, it makes me think he is delusional and cant tell whats real and whats not, and is also paranoid and nervous. He is very patient with what he those and takes his time because he wants to succeed with what he is planning to do. He is a murderer but it’s not like he chose this all the time, it’s more like he has the drive to do it this one time. This can relate to our culture because we have people who suffer from mental illnesses and who have no control and end up doing something that they regret. This can also tie down to our society because of all of the people who have turned themselves in because they can’t deal with the guilt. If you take out the images and symbols then you are taking away a big chunk of the lesson of the story. If there wasnt an eye then we would have no reason why he killed him. Story in overall its a well-put-together story that uses everything and gives it meaning and a purpose. The author knew what he wanted and how he wanted it and put it down just like that.
