Social Responsibility: Underserved Health Care Reform
The healthcare providers who benefited greatly from federal subsidies were fortunate to obtain a high-quality medical education without overwhelming student loans. Such benefit is an immense financial relief, and not every student is fortunate enough to take hold of it. Thus, those who do should be grateful and attempt to repay the society that helps them with the financial burden. Providing medical care to the underserved population is a great way to do it. Moreover, this activity can be extended even further to become a compulsory practice for medical university students. It would serve two primary functions helping students improve their skills and apply them in practice, as well as provide the underserved patients with sufficient medical assistance. In this way, even those who paid fully for their tuition would help the underserved, thus, guaranteeing help to the extended number of people who need it but cannot afford to pay immense medical bills.
Therefore, it is evident that the current healthcare delivery system of the United States is in need of serious reform. People with severe medical conditions often cannot afford therapy or even necessary medications due to their high costs and rising populations rising unemployment rates. Moreover, not everyone can qualify for the Medicaid program, let alone those who fall into the so-called coverage gap resulting from the number of states declining the Medicaid expansion (U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2020). That is why the implementation of serving the lower-income people by medical students and the graduates who received federal subsidies during education would be a promising way to solve the problem of expensive healthcare in America. The effectiveness and social urge for such an approach may as well be supported by biblical principles of justice and mutual help. According to Christianity, all people were made equal by the Creator, and everyone has a fundamental right to receive medical assistance and maintain their health to live a fulfilled life, regardless of their income and social position. That is why medical reform regarding the underserved is of crucial importance for the American healthcare system, and the role of practitioners in this mission must not be underrated.
