Why Do You Want to Be an Accountant: Personal Narrative Essay

If I were to describe myself in three words, Id say rational, logical, and organized. For me, these qualities are essential in my preferred field of work, in finance. Ive felt a passion for this subject since early childhood, and my time at secondary school has consolidated my interest in it.

I remember being 12 years old, on holiday with my grandparents in Tenerife. I was given the responsibility of keeping our holiday money and budgeting for the fortnight. This was the moment I knew, sitting with a calculator in hand and a spreadsheet on the laptop, I wanted to become an accountant. I enjoy the business and finance side of the school and would love to further my skills and knowledge within this sector. I believe this will help me to become a chartered accountant after I get my degree.

One of the many skills needed to become an accountant or work in finance is numeracy and mathematical ability. Since primary school, Mathematics has been a subject I enjoy and have always excelled in. I believe the skills Ive learned throughout my school career enable me to succeed in a career in accountancy. My studies in this subject helped improve not only numerical skills but problem-solving too. Thanks to these problem-solving abilities, I was able to transfer these skills over to other academic subjects such as my Business Skills Foundation Apprenticeship. During one of the lessons, my lecturer threw me into the deep end and set me up with a challenge. In groups, we had to raise as much money as we possibly could for charity without any funding or resources. After a quick brainstorm, we decided to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust and started to formulate a plan of action. We came up with many ideas before deciding on a coffee morning. We were able to obtain a venue for free and decided that home baking would help keep our costs low. To help increase turnout and sales, I, reluctantly, agreed to Brave the Shave and have my hair completely shaved off. I absolutely loved this challenge because not only did I get to problem solve and work out the logistics of the task, we raised £650 for the charity. This fills me with great pride and remains my greatest achievement to date.

I believe that effective communication is vital in the world of finance. I consider myself to possess this skill, and this was shown when I was selected to become a Human Utopia hero. Human Utopia is involved in empowering young people by helping them to build their confidence and give them a positive outlook on life. On several occasions, Ive been fortunate enough to help various people, of all ages, to do this. I did this by running different workshops and I used communication skills to ensure that they were comfortable opening up to me if they needed to talk. Human Utopia really took me out of my comfort zone. However, this has really brought me out of my shell and given me the ability to gain communication and interpersonal skills that will be invaluable in the future.

I genuinely believe that behind every good business is a great accountant. They are an integral part to ensure companies are successful and I look forward to the time when I can make a positive impact on the world of business. For me, the only way to do that is to become a successful chartered accountant. Steve Jobs once said: Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. I think he hit the nail on the head. Im blessed to have found my passion.
